Who Am I in Christ? Identity Beyond Performance and Approval
Who Am I in Christ? Identity Beyond Performance and Approval

Who Am I in Christ? Identity Beyond Performance and Approval

You have been doing all the right things. Showing up, serving, staying responsible. And yet somewhere underneath all of it, a quiet question lingers: Am I enough? If you have ever felt like your worth is tied to what you accomplish or how well you hold everything together, you are not alone, and you are in the right place.

This episode is an invitation to set that weight down.

In this first conversation, we sit with what it means to find your identity in Christ, not the version of identity built on performance, approval, or the roles others have placed on you, but the identity God established before you ever proved a single thing. If you are a Christian woman who is tired of striving and quietly longing for something more rooted, this episode was made for you.

Here’s what I cover:

  • Why so many Christian women unknowingly tie their worth to achievement and approval, and how that shift happens gradually, without us ever intending it
  • The difference between striving and serving, and why they can look identical on the outside but come from completely different places in the heart
  • What Ephesians 1:4 reveals about the moment God established your identity before performance, before accomplishment, before you proved anything at all
  • How the question “who are you when you stop striving?” can become one of the most clarifying and quietly freeing invitations of your faith journey
  • Why formation matters more than performance, and what it looks like to begin living from your identity in Christ rather than reaching toward it
  • A moment of guided reflection and prayer to help you release what you have been carrying and return to the truth of who God says you are

This episode is for the Christian woman who loves God deeply but has quietly confused doing for Him with being with Him. It is for the woman who serves faithfully, leads graciously, and holds a great deal together, and who is beginning to wonder whether she is living from rest or from striving. If you have ever questioned whether God’s love is something you have to sustain through your own effort, this is a gentle and grounding place to begin.

“You are not becoming valuable. You already are.”

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:00:01 – 00:00:33]:

[00:00:01] Welcome. I’m Dr. [00:00:02] Robin Revis Pyke, and this is reflecting a Christian woman’s journey of faith. [00:00:07] Here you will learn what it truly means to live from your identity in Christ. [00:00:12] We’ll explore how Christian women just like you navigate the in between seasons using biblical truths and honest conversations. [00:00:20] This podcast is your safe space to pause, reflect, and remember who God says you are. [00:00:27] So come as you are, you are loved, chosen, and created by grace. [00:00:32] And I am so glad you are here.

Understanding Your Identity in Christ

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:00:34 – 00:01:32]:

[00:00:34] So let’s start this journey together. [00:00:37] Hello and welcome. [00:00:39] Today, I want to begin with something foundational to the Christian journey. [00:00:43] Identity. [00:00:45] Not identity shaped by culture, not identity shaped by expectations, but identity grounded in who God says we are. [00:00:56] So many women quietly carry a question in their hearts, who am I really? [00:01:03] And underneath that question is often another one, am I enough? [00:01:10] Identity is the foundation of the Christian life. [00:01:14] In this podcast, identity is not about roles, achievements, or expectations, but about who we are because we belong to God. [00:01:26] Many women live from identity shaped by performance, responsibility, or the approval of others.

Releasing False Identities and Embracing Your True Worth

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:01:33 – 00:02:39]:

[00:01:33] Through honest reflection and scripture, this topic gently invites listeners to release false identities and rediscover their true identity as beloved daughters of God, chosen, known, and held. [00:01:51] Even in seasons of uncertainty, this conversation creates space to stop striving and begin living from a place of rootedness in Christ. [00:02:04] You see, most of us don’t set out to define ourselves by achievement or approval. [00:02:11] It happens gradually, over time. [00:02:15] We become the responsible ones, the capable ones, the helper, the one others rely on. [00:02:25] These roles are not wrong. [00:02:27] In fact, many of them are beautiful expressions of love and service. [00:02:34] But somewhere along the way, they can slowly become our identity.

Performance-Based Identity vs. God-Given Identity

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:02:40 – 00:03:51]:

[00:02:40] Instead of saying, I am a beloved daughter of God who serves others, we begin living as though I am only as valuable as what I accomplish. [00:02:55] For many years, I worked in private school admissions. [00:02:58] It was meaningful work, walking alongside families, helping them navigate decisions about their children’s education and opportunities. [00:03:08] But admissions is also a place where acceptance and identity intersect very visibly. [00:03:17] Families wait for decisions. [00:03:20] Students wonder if they are enough parents, and students hope to be chosen. [00:03:27] And over those years, I began to notice something deeper about the human heart. [00:03:34] We all long to know we belong, but if we’re not careful, we begin tying our worth to being chosen by the wrong things, chosen by institutions, chosen by achievements, chosen by other people.

Scriptural Perspective on Being Chosen and Loved

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:03:53 – 00:04:43]:

[00:03:53] And Scripture offers us a radically different starting point. [00:03:58] Ephesians 1, verse 4 reminds us, for he chose us and him before the creation of the world. [00:04:10] He chose us before performance, before accomplishment, before we proved anything. [00:04:20] God’s love established our identity before our effort ever entered the story. [00:04:29] Let’s let that truth sink in for just a moment. [00:04:33] You are not becoming valuable. [00:04:35] You already are valuable. [00:04:38] Even as believers, many of us still live with quiet striving.

Striving vs. Serving: Finding Rest in Your Faith

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:04:44 – 00:05:27]:

[00:04:44] We claim to trust God’s love, but we try to sustain it through our own effort. [00:04:49] We stay busy. [00:04:51] We stay responsible. [00:04:52] We stay dependable. [00:04:55] Not because we don’t love God, but because somewhere deep inside, we still wonder if we are enough. [00:05:05] There was a season when God gently asked me a question that I still carry with me today. [00:05:12] It was a simple question. [00:05:15] Who are you when you stop striving? [00:05:21] Not who are you when you succeed, not who are you when others affirm you.

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:05:29 – 00:06:22]:

[00:05:29] But Robin, who are you when there is nothing to prove? [00:05:35] The question caught me off guard, and I wasn’t sure how to answer the question. [00:05:39] I thought I was serving. [00:05:41] I thought I was helping. [00:05:43] But I learned that striving and serving can look similar on the outside, but they are completely different at the heart level. [00:05:53] And understanding that difference is essential. [00:05:56] When we talk about our identity in Christ, you see, striving is rooted in performance. [00:06:02] It’s the subtle and sometimes not so subtle belief that we have to earn our worth, prove our value, or secure our place in God’s love. [00:06:15] Striving says, if I do more, be more, fix more, achieve more, then I will be enough.

The Difference Between Striving and Serving

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:06:23 – 00:07:19]:

[00:06:23] And to be honest, it’s exhausting because it places the weight of identity on our shoulders. [00:06:31] Even spiritually, striving can disguise itself as devotion over committing, constantly doing, never resting. [00:06:41] Because deep down we’re trying to validate who we are. [00:06:46] But Scripture reminds us in Ephesians 2, verses 8 through 9 that we are saved by grace, not by works. [00:06:56] For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves. [00:07:02] It is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast. [00:07:08] Serving flows from identity. [00:07:11] Serving says, because I am already loved, already chosen, already secure in Christ, I can give freely.

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:07:20 – 00:08:04]:

[00:07:20] Serving is an overflow, not a requirement. [00:07:24] When we serve from a place of abiding, as Jesus teaches in John 15:5, we’re not trying to prove anything. [00:07:33] We’re simply staying connected to the vine and fruit is the natural result. [00:07:39] Serving is marked by peace, not by pressure, by obedience, not by obligation, by surrender, not self reliance. [00:07:50] The key difference is this. [00:07:52] Striving is driven by fear. [00:07:55] Fear of not being enough, fear of falling short, fear of losing approval. [00:08:02] Serving is driven by love.

Living From Your Secure Identity in Christ

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:08:05 – 00:09:02]:

[00:08:05] Love for God and love for others, rooted in the truth that our identity is already secure. [00:08:12] In Him. [00:08:15] So the question becomes, are you working for your identity or are you living from it? [00:08:23] When we truly embrace who we are in Christ, we stop chasing validation and start walking in freedom. [00:08:32] We still serve, we still show up, we still pour out. [00:08:37] But now it comes from a place of rest. [00:08:39] And that is where true fruitfulness begins. [00:08:45] So who are you when you stop striving? [00:08:49] This question invited me to deeply reflect on where my identity lies. [00:08:55] Because somewhere along the way, following Jesus became more about doing for God than being with God.

Biblical Truths About Your Identity

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:09:04 – 00:09:58]:

[00:09:04] Yet Scripture reminds us that the Christian life is not about performance, it’s about formation. [00:09:12] This question invites us to return to something deeper. [00:09:18] Your identity is not your productivity, your roles, your past mistakes, your current uncertainty. [00:09:27] Your identity is beloved and the Bible Beloved means to be deeply loved, cherished, highly esteemed, and chosen by God. [00:09:38] It signifies a secure, intimate relationship, marking followers of Jesus as dearly loved children who are favored and treasured. [00:09:51] Beloved, you are known by God. [00:09:54] You are chosen by God. [00:09:57] You are dearly loved by God.

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:09:59 – 00:10:59]:

[00:09:59] And when we begin living from that truth, something changes. [00:10:04] We stop striving and we start living as someone who already belongs. [00:10:12] Let’s pause for just a moment. [00:10:15] Ask yourself, what identity have I been carrying lately? [00:10:21] Is it the identity of the responsible one, the strong one, the one who holds everything together? [00:10:31] Now ask God, who do you say I am? [00:10:37] In John 15, verse 16, God says, We are chosen. [00:10:42] You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit. [00:10:50] Fruit that will last. [00:10:52] And so that whatever you ask in my name, the Father will give you. [00:10:57] God chose you.

Embracing God’s Unconditional Love

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:11:01 – 00:11:42]:

[00:11:01] John 3:16. [00:11:02] God says we are loved. [00:11:04] For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, and that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. [00:11:15] God loves you, and his love for you is unconditional. [00:11:19] His love is not based on striving or achievement. [00:11:24] And before doing anything, let’s remember that we are first beloved daughters of God. [00:11:32] Identity always takes precedence over activity. [00:11:37] And when we forget this truth, we operate out of exhaustion rather than grace.

Resting in Your God-Given Identity

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:11:44 – 00:12:35]:

[00:11:44] And I will admit there are many times in my life when I am operating out of exhaustion. [00:11:51] But when I slow down, I hear what had been previously drowned out by noise, by busyness. [00:11:59] I hear God’s gentle voice, his loving invitation to be still, and his truth about who I really am, a beloved daughter of God. [00:12:12] You see, following Christ isn’t about proving our worth. [00:12:17] It’s about resting in it. [00:12:20] And as we release the pressure to become who the world expects us to be. [00:12:25] We are free to become who God created us to be. [00:12:30] Women grounded in Christ, shaped by his love and guided by His Spirit.

Receiving Your Identity by Grace

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:12:36 – 00:13:28]:

[00:12:36] My sweet friends, identity in Christ is not something we achieve. [00:12:42] It’s something we receive again and again. [00:12:47] And my prayer for you today is that you would rest not in what you do, but in who you already are in Him. [00:12:57] Let us pray. [00:12:59] Lord Jesus, thank you for reminding us that our identity is in you. [00:13:05] It is not something we strive to earn, but a gift you place into our hands again and again. [00:13:12] Lord, quiet our hearts from the noise of performance and the pressure to prove ourselves. [00:13:18] Teach us to rest not in our accomplishments, not in our roles, not not in the expectations of others, but in the truth of who we already are in you.

Closing Prayer and Encouragement

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:13:30 – 00:14:28]:

[00:13:30] Let your spirit whisper to each precious daughter listening today that she is beloved, chosen and held. [00:13:39] Lord, draw her into the freedom of receiving rather than achieving, trusting rather than striving, resting rather than running. [00:13:48] May she walk in the confidence of a woman rooted in Christ, secure in your love, steady in your grace, and strengthened by your presence. [00:13:59] Amen. [00:14:01] As we close today’s episode of Reflecting Life, I want to leave you with this gentle reminder. [00:14:08] Your identity is not found in your roles, titles, possessions, or the ever changing circumstances of life. [00:14:17] Your identity is found in the unchanging truth of who God says you are. [00:14:23] You are seen, you are chosen, and you are deeply loved by Him.

Preview of Next Episode and Final Thoughts

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:14:30 – 00:15:13]:

[00:14:30] And the next episode we’ll discuss acceptance and the freedom we find when we stop trying to earn what God has already given. [00:14:39] Thank you for joining me on this journey of faith today. [00:14:43] If this episode encouraged your heart, be sure to subscribe, share it with a friend, and continue reflecting on how God is forming you in this season. [00:15:05] Until next time, keep walking closely with him, abiding in his presence and reflecting his love in your everyday life.

More about Reflecting Life: A Christian Woman’s Journey of Faith

In today’s hustle-driven culture, even faith has become something to perform. Too many Christian women are living disconnected from their true identity in Christ. Constantly striving, doubting, and searching for belonging in places that can’t truly fulfill them. But you were created to be loved, chosen, and formed by grace, not to earn your worth through endless doing.

Welcome to Reflecting Life, A Christian Woman’s Journey of Faith, where Christian women can exhale, reflect, and remember whose they are.

Hosted by Biblical mentor and spiritual formation coach Dr. Robin Revis Pyke, this podcast features real women sharing real stories of faith, struggle, and hope, along with thoughtful conversations that gently point you back to God’s truth. This is companionship on the journey and not cheerleading from the sidelines.

This show will deliver Scripture-grounded teaching, honest storytelling, and gentle formation practices to help you move from striving to rootedness, from performance to presence with God. If you’re spiritually restless and craving depth over surface inspiration, you’re in the right place.

We’ll answer questions like:

  • How do I find my identity in Christ?
  • What is God’s purpose for my life?
  • How do I hear God’s voice clearly?
  • Am I enough in God’s eyes?
  • What is spiritual formation, and why does it matter?
  • Why do I feel spiritually burned out?
  • How do I know if God loves me?
  • How can I find purpose after 40 as a Christian woman?
  • What does it look like to live from grace instead of performance?
  • How do I navigate between seasons of faith?

This podcast is for Christian women in in-between seasons who love God but are wrestling with transition, calling, identity, or a sense of belonging. Whether you’re feeling spiritually restless, frustrated by performance-driven faith, quietly wrestling with obedience and waiting, or simply craving deeper formation, this space was made for you.

If you’re ready to stop striving for acceptance and start resting in the truth that you’re already formed in Christ, this podcast will give you the encouragement, Biblical truth, and sacred space to do just that.

Come as you are. Pause, listen, and reflect honestly on where God is meeting you in this season.

But Jesus gives us a different invitation: 𝗔𝗯𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲.

Spiritual maturity is not something we manufacture through greater effort. It is formed as we remain rooted in Christ through Scripture, prayer, surrender, and everyday obedience.

The fruit comes from the connection.

So before asking, “What do I need to do better?” ask: “Am I staying close to Jesus?”

Today, set aside 10 quiet minutes with Christ. No striving. No agenda. Simply read John 15:1–5, sit with His Words, and ask, “Lord, what are You forming in me?”
