Walking in Step with the Spirit and Recognizing God's Voice
Walking in Step with the Spirit and Recognizing God's Voice

Walking in Step with the Spirit and Recognizing God’s Voice

You have heard it before. Walk in the Spirit, or keep in step with the Spirit. But if you’re honest, there are seasons where you’re not walking with God so much as running ahead of Him, moving fast, making decisions, filling in the gaps yourself, and hoping He is somewhere behind you keeping up.

Dr. Robin knows that feeling well. She has run ahead of God more times than she can count. And his episode is an invitation to slow down and walk closely with Him again.

In this reflection, she opens Galatians 5:25 and sits with one of the quietest invitations in Scripture: if we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. One ordinary moment at a time, attentively, with Him.

What we explore in this episode:

  • What it means to walk in step with the Spirit, and why it looks less like dramatic spiritual experiences and more like small daily choices to listen rather than lead
  • The tension between the flesh and the Spirit that every believer lives with, and how it shows up in the ordinary crossroads of everyday life
  • How to recognize when the Holy Spirit is speaking to you, through Scripture, conviction, peace, and sometimes a quiet discomfort that invites you to reconsider
  • Why daily rhythms with God matter, and how consistent time in prayer and Scripture gradually makes us more sensitive to His voice
  • What happens when we stumble and get out of step, and why God’s grace always invites us back rather than leaving us where we fell
  • How surrendering to God’s will, rather than pushing through on sheer willpower, is what allows the fruit of the Spirit to quietly grow

This episode is for the Christian woman who suspects she has been moving a little faster than God intended. It is for the woman who has been asking how to hear God’s voice amid a full and noisy life. It is for the woman who has stumbled and needs the reminder that conviction is not condemnation, and that every time she returns to Him, He is already there.

Spiritual growth does not happen in the extraordinary moments, but in the small ones. And over time, those small moments of choosing to walk in step with the Spirit form a life that quietly reflects Christ.

“Walking with the Spirit is not about becoming a perfect Christian woman. It is about becoming a surrendered one.”

– Dr. Robin

Mentioned Scriptures
Galatians 5:25, Galatians 5

[00:00:00] Hello, friends, and welcome to Reflecting Life. [00:00:03] And I’m Robin Revis Pyke, Christian life coach and mentor and fellow traveler in the journey of spiritual formation here on Reflecting Life. [00:00:12] We take moment to pause in the middle of our everyday lives to reflect on what God is forming within us. [00:00:18] Because faith isn’t simply about believing the right things. [00:00:22] It’s about becoming the women God created us to be. [00:00:27] Women who live rooted in Christ, women whose lives quietly reflect his character. [00:00:33] Women who are being formed by the Holy Spirit day by day. [00:00:37] In our last reflection, we talked about the fruit of the Spirit and the significance of bearing good fruit in our lives.

Going Deeper: Walking in Step with the Spirit

[00:00:46] Today we’re going one step deeper. [00:00:49] Because fruit doesn’t just appear. [00:00:52] Fruit grows when we walk in step with the Spirit. [00:00:56] Our focus Scripture today comes from Galatians 5, verse 25. [00:01:03] If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. [00:01:09] This simple verse holds a powerful invitation for every Christian woman. [00:01:15] God is not asking us to run ahead of Him. [00:01:18] He is inviting us to walk with Him.

The Temptation to Run Ahead

[00:01:22] And I’ll be honest. [00:01:24] I’ve been known to run ahead of God many, many times. [00:01:29] Sometimes it may appear that we just want it so bad, or we think a door is opening. [00:01:35] But when I don’t stop and pray, if I’m not keeping in step with the Spirit, I’m going to be running ahead of him every time. [00:01:48] So think about that for a moment. [00:01:49] About the image of walking with someone. [00:01:52] When two people walk together, they move in the same direction. [00:01:56] They adjust their pace.

What It Means to Walk with the Spirit

[00:01:58] They remain attentive to one another. [00:02:02] Walking requires awareness. [00:02:05] In the same way, walking in step with the Spirit means living with an awareness of God’s presence and and guidance in our everyday lives. [00:02:16] It is not about theatrical spiritual moments. [00:02:20] It’s about small daily choices. [00:02:23] Choosing patience when frustration rises. [00:02:27] Choosing kindness when someone is difficult. [00:02:30] Choosing humility when pride wants to take over.

Alignment, Not Perfection

[00:02:34] Walking with the Spirit is not about perfection. [00:02:39] It’s about alignment. [00:02:41] It means allowing the Spirit of God to shape our thoughts, guide our responses and lead our decisions. [00:02:50] And the beautiful thing about this kind of life is that it becomes less about striving and more about surrender. [00:02:58] And we’ve talked about striving a few times. [00:03:03] And it it’s so important for us to know that the Christian life was never meant to be lived through sheer willpower. [00:03:13] God gave us His Spirit so that we would never have to walk alone. [00:03:19] Take a moment to reflect on this question.

Reflecting on Your Walk

[00:03:22] Where in my life am I trying to move ahead without listening for the Spirit’s guidance? [00:03:30] Where might God Be inviting me to slow down and walk more closely with him. [00:03:37] You know, you’ve probably heard the tension between the flesh and the spirit in Galatians 5. [00:03:44] The apostle Paul talks about something every believer experiences. [00:03:49] This tension between the flesh and the Spirit. [00:03:53] And the flesh represents our natural tendencies, our desire for control, comfort, recognition, or even self centered living. [00:04:04] The Spirit, on the other hand, leads us toward humility, love, obedience and trusting God. [00:04:12] And this tension can show up in very ordinary ways. [00:04:17] Maybe you feel pulled to respond sharply in a conversation, but the Spirit gently prompts you towards patience.

Recognizing the Spirit in Everyday Life

[00:04:26] Maybe the comparison starts creeping in when you see someone else’s success, but the Spirit nudges you toward gratitude. [00:04:35] Maybe anxiety tries to take hold of your heart, but the Spirit whispers peace. [00:04:41] Walking in step with the Spirit means learning to recognize these moments. [00:04:46] Because spiritual formation often happens right there in the small crossroads of everyday life. [00:04:55] And when we respond to the Spirit’s leading, something beautiful begins to happen. [00:05:02] Our hearts slowly begin to change. [00:05:07] Transformation is taking place from the inside out. [00:05:14] One of the questions many Christian women ask is, how do I know when the Holy Spirit is leading me? [00:05:22] The Spirit often speaks in ways that are gentle rather than dramatic.

How the Spirit Leads: Gentle Guidance

[00:05:28] His guidance frequently comes through Scripture conviction, wisdom, peace, and sometimes even a holy discomfort that invites us to reconsider our path or our choices. [00:05:43] I refer to this discomfort as a nudge in my Spirit because the Spirit will never lead us in a way that contradicts the word of God. [00:05:53] Never. [00:05:55] Instead, he uses Scripture to illuminate truth and guide our decisions. [00:06:02] For example, you may feel prompted to offer forgiveness when it feels difficult. [00:06:08] Extend compassion to someone who is hurting. [00:06:12] Pause before speaking words that might wound. [00:06:16] These quiet promptings are often the Spirit shaping our hearts to reflect Christ.

Deepening the Relationship with God

[00:06:22] And the more we walk with him, the more familiar his guidance becomes. [00:06:28] Just like any relationship, attentiveness deepens connection. [00:06:34] Remember, to abide is to remain with Him. [00:06:40] And the more we keep our eyes focused on God and His Word and His truth, the easier of a time we will have walking with Him. [00:06:52] As I said before, I’m a work in progress. [00:06:55] I have run before God more times than I can even imagine. [00:07:01] I get excited. [00:07:02] I think, this is it.

[00:07:04] This is where he wants me. [00:07:06] Or maybe I just want it that bad. [00:07:09] I don’t know. [00:07:11] But I do know that when I’m wrestling with what God has placed on my heart, I need to pause. [00:07:19] I need to be still and listen. [00:07:23] Listen for the promptings, listen for the guidance, and most importantly, to align his will with my decisions. [00:07:35] And that is not Always the case. [00:07:37] We are given free will to make our own decisions.

The Role of Daily Rhythms

[00:07:41] And boy, have I made some careless decisions in my life. [00:07:46] But God has always brought me through. [00:07:49] Whenever I return to him, he is always there. [00:07:54] And I will tell you the daily rhythms that we establish in our life, the daily rhythms we create that helps us walk with the Spirit. [00:08:06] Those rhythms, walking with the Spirit, it does not happen accidentally. [00:08:13] It is nurtured through rhythms that keep our hearts connected to God. [00:08:19] These rhythms are not meant to be rigid obligations. [00:08:22] They are not invitations.

Practicing Spiritual Rhythms

[00:08:24] And for many women, these rhythms include beginning the day with prayer, reading and reflecting on scripture, practicing gratitude, pausing during the day to acknowledge God’s presence, ending the day with reflection. [00:08:45] These simple practices create space for the Spirit to shape our hearts. [00:08:52] And when we regularly come before God, we become more sensitive to his voice. [00:08:59] We begin to notice his guidance in the moments we might otherwise overlook. [00:09:06] It’s those times where you start to wrestle with that gentle nudge where he’s guiding you, and you might wrestle with it. [00:09:15] And if we do not create space for God daily, we may miss that. [00:09:25] We may not notice or recognize his guidance in those moments that are significant to our spiritual growth and our journey. [00:09:39] Walking with the Spirit is less about extraordinary spiritual experiences, and it is more about faithfulness and ordinary moments.

The Power of Ordinary Moments

[00:09:49] And over time, those ordinary moments form a life that reflects Christ. [00:09:56] And like I said, there will be times when we fall out of step with the Spirit. [00:10:01] Moments when we respond from frustration instead of patience. [00:10:07] We’re reacting and not responding. [00:10:10] Moments when pride takes over. [00:10:13] Moments when we allow our fear to speak louder than our faith. [00:10:18] And when those moments happen, the enemy would love for us to believe we have failed. [00:10:26] But the truth is, God’s grace always invites us back.

Embracing God’s Grace When We Stumble

[00:10:33] Walking with the Spirit. [00:10:35] It doesn’t mean we’re never going to stumble. [00:10:39] It doesn’t mean we’re not going to make a poor choice. [00:10:46] Doesn’t mean we’re free from mistakes. [00:10:49] But when we do stumble, the Spirit will gently convict us, restore us, and guide us forward again. [00:10:59] If we return. [00:11:02] And each time we respond with humility and repentance, our hearts become more receptive to God’s shaping. [00:11:14] Remember, we will stumble.

[00:11:17] It’s not if, it’s when. [00:11:20] And when we do, and we respond with humility and repentance, our hearts will become more receptive to God’s shaping. [00:11:32] And that is spiritual formation again. [00:11:36] You know, this podcast isn’t about fixing us. [00:11:41] It’s about surrendering and allowing God to form us into the women he created us to be. [00:11:49] My Friends, walking in step with the Spirit is. [00:11:53] Is not about becoming a perfect Christian woman. [00:11:56] It’s about becoming a surrendered one.

The Beauty of a Surrendered Life

[00:12:00] A woman who listens, who trust. [00:12:04] A woman who allows God to shape her heart day by day. [00:12:09] And as you walk with the Spirit, something beautiful happens. [00:12:14] The fruit of the Spirit begins to grow. [00:12:18] Love becomes more natural. [00:12:21] Peace steadies your heart. [00:12:23] Patience deepens. [00:12:25] Kindness flows.

[00:12:28] Not because you’re trying harder, not because you’re striving, but because the Spirit of God is forming Christ within you. [00:12:39] And I am so thankful, grateful and blessed that God never gives up on us. [00:12:46] He. [00:12:46] He never forsakes us. [00:12:48] He never leaves us where we are. [00:12:52] When we repent and we return to him, he is always there. [00:13:02] Let us pray. [00:13:03] Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit.

Prayer of Surrender and Guidance

[00:13:09] Lord, teach us to walk closely with you. [00:13:13] Help us become more aware of your presence and your guidance in our everyday lives. [00:13:19] Lord, when we feel the pull of our own desires, remind us to listen for your voice. [00:13:26] Lord, when we begin wrestling with the flesh, we pray that you shape our hearts so that our lives reflect the love, peace and character of Christ. [00:13:40] Help us to remain in step with you as you continue forming us into the women you created us to be. [00:13:48] In your holy and precious name, we pray. [00:13:51] Amen. [00:13:54] Thank you for joining me today on Reflecting Life.

[00:13:57] If this reflection encouraged you, I’d love for you to share this episode with another woman who may need this reminder today. [00:14:05] And until next time, remember, he is forming your life. [00:14:10] And when you walk in step with His Spirit, your life will begin to reflect Christ in beautiful and meaningful ways. [00:14:19] Keep on shining.

More about Reflecting Life: A Christian Woman’s Journey of Faith

In today’s hustle-driven culture, even faith has become something to perform. Too many Christian women are living disconnected from their true identity in Christ. Constantly striving, doubting, and searching for belonging in places that can’t truly fulfill them. But you were created to be loved, chosen, and formed by grace, not to earn your worth through endless doing.

Welcome to Reflecting Life, A Christian Woman’s Journey of Faith, where Christian women can exhale, reflect, and remember whose they are.

Hosted by Biblical mentor and spiritual formation coach Dr. Robin Revis Pyke, this podcast features real women sharing real stories of faith, struggle, and hope, along with thoughtful conversations that gently point you back to God’s truth. This is companionship on the journey and not cheerleading from the sidelines.

This show will deliver Scripture-grounded teaching, honest storytelling, and gentle formation practices to help you move from striving to rootedness, from performance to presence with God. If you’re spiritually restless and craving depth over surface inspiration, you’re in the right place.

We’ll answer questions like:

  • How do I find my identity in Christ?
  • What is God’s purpose for my life?
  • How do I hear God’s voice clearly?
  • Am I enough in God’s eyes?
  • What is spiritual formation, and why does it matter?
  • Why do I feel spiritually burned out?
  • How do I know if God loves me?
  • How can I find purpose after 40 as a Christian woman?
  • What does it look like to live from grace instead of performance?
  • How do I navigate between seasons of faith?

This podcast is for Christian women in in-between seasons who love God but are wrestling with transition, calling, identity, or a sense of belonging. Whether you’re feeling spiritually restless, frustrated by performance-driven faith, quietly wrestling with obedience and waiting, or simply craving deeper formation, this space was made for you.

If you’re ready to stop striving for acceptance and start resting in the truth that you’re already formed in Christ, this podcast will give you the encouragement, Biblical truth, and sacred space to do just that.

Come as you are. Pause, listen, and reflect honestly on where God is meeting you in this season.

But Jesus gives us a different invitation: 𝗔𝗯𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲.

Spiritual maturity is not something we manufacture through greater effort. It is formed as we remain rooted in Christ through Scripture, prayer, surrender, and everyday obedience.

The fruit comes from the connection.

So before asking, “What do I need to do better?” ask: “Am I staying close to Jesus?”

Today, set aside 10 quiet minutes with Christ. No striving. No agenda. Simply read John 15:1–5, sit with His Words, and ask, “Lord, what are You forming in me?”
