Spiritual Mentoring: When God Gives You an Elizabeth to Strengthen Your Faith

Spiritual mentoring for women rarely looks like a program. It looks like Elizabeth opening her door to Mary and speaking a blessing before either woman has explained a thing. Dr. Robin spends this episode with that moment in Luke, and with the two women in her own life who taught her the same lesson from opposite ends: one who mentored her and one she now mentors in return.

If you have ever wondered why one relationship shaped your faith and another one just took up space, or whether you have anything to offer a woman further behind you on the road, this episode was written for that question.

Dr. Robin opens with the moment in Luke where Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit the instant Mary arrives, before a single word of explanation passes between them. She traces that same pattern into her own story: a young mother of three in Miami Shores, told by an older woman that she had leadership gifts she could not yet see, and a neighbor in Central Florida who still mentors her today.

What we explore in this episode:

  • What made Elizabeth’s welcome an act of mentoring instead of ordinary hospitality, and why Luke 1:39-45 still shapes how Robin defines the word
  • Paul’s charge to older women in Titus 2:3-5, and why it was never about having every answer
  • Why comparison keeps Christian women from becoming an Elizabeth for someone else, and what Elizabeth’s own miracle pregnancy teaches about mentoring without competing
  • The difference between mentoring from a position of superiority and mentoring from a place of shared faith
  • Why the mentor is shaped by the relationship as much as the woman she is walking beside, and what that reveals about spiritual formation
  • Reflection questions for naming your own Elizabeths, and asking who might be waiting for you to become one

This is for the woman who was quietly encouraged by someone farther along and never said thank you, the woman further along wondering if she has anything left to give a younger one, and any woman who has confused mentoring with needing a title or a platform first.

“A mentor isn’t someone who has all the answers. A mentor is someone who helps another person see God’s faithfulness more clearly.”

– Dr. Robin

If you have an Elizabeth in your life, this is your nudge to tell her. And if you are new to Reflecting Life, this is a quiet space for Christian women learning to walk their pilgrimage with others, not alone. Follow the podcast so you do not miss the next conversation.

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:00:00 – 00:01:13]:
Hello, sweet friend, and welcome! I’m Dr. Robin Revis Pyke, and I pray today’s message encourages your heart and draws you a little closer to Jesus. I truly believe our spiritual journey is a sacred unfolding, shaped by the experiences God allows and the choices we make in response to His voice. Each season, whether filled with joy, waiting, struggle, or growth, becomes another chapter in the beautiful story God is writing in our lives. But today, I want to talk about one of the greatest gifts God gives us on that journey. He gives us people. And if you listened in on the last episode, we spoke about the beautiful relationship of Naomi and Ruth. So today, more specifically, I want to share about the women He gives us who who strengthen our faith, the women who remind us of God’s promises when we’ve forgotten them, women who quietly encourage us to keep walking, women who gently challenge us to become more Christlike, women who often recognize God’s work in us before we recognize it in ourselves.

The Importance of “Elizabeths”

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:01:15 – 00:02:03]:
I like to call these women our Elizabeths. And I believe every woman needs an Elizabeth. I’m fortunate. I have an Elizabeth in my very own neighborhood, and she is a blessing, a remarkable neighbor, and she is definitely someone who quietly encourages me each and every day. And as I’ve reflected on my own journey with Christ, one truth continues to surface. I would not be the woman I am today without the faithful women God placed along my path. I’ve been blessed with strong Christian women who saw something in me before I fully saw it in myself. Some were older.

Mentors Shaping Our Walk

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:02:03 – 00:02:30]:
Some were teachers. Some were ministry leaders. Others were simply faithful women who loved Jesus deeply. None of them were perfect. But every one of them became part of God’s formation in my life. They encouraged me when I doubted myself, when I didn’t know what I didn’t know, and that was a lot. They prayed for me. They asked difficult questions that helped me grow.

Mentoring Through Presence and Correction

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:02:30 – 00:03:12]:
Sometimes they gently corrected me. Sometimes they simply listened. They reminded me of who I was in Christ when I had no idea. When I was a very young believer, they were there, walking along beside me. And they reminded me that following Jesus isn’t about perfection; it’s about faithfulness. Looking back, I realize they weren’t simply helping me navigate life; they were helping Christ shape my heart. And I am deeply grateful for each of them. And perhaps that’s one reason mentoring has become such an important part of my own calling.

The Impact of Mentoring

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:03:13 – 00:03:50]:
I’ve experienced firsthand what happens when one woman faithfully pours into another. The impact extends far beyond a single conversation. It echoes through generations. Our story today comes from Luke chapter 1. Most of us will immediately think about Mary when we read this chapter. But today, I’d like us to look more closely at Elizabeth. After the angel Gabriel tells Mary that she will give birth to Jesus, Mary travels to visit her relative Elizabeth. Let’s read what happened.

The Encounter of Mary and Elizabeth

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:03:52 – 00:04:38]:
Luke 1:39-45. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, something remarkable happened. The baby in Elizabeth’s womb Mary leaped for joy, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then she spoke words that changed everything for Mary. She said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear. Can you imagine hearing those words? Mary had just received astonishing news. She was likely overwhelmed, perhaps afraid, certainly uncertain about what lay ahead. Before anyone else fully understood what God was doing, Elizabeth recognized it.

Elizabeth’s Role as a Spiritual Mentor

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:04:38 – 00:05:12]:
She affirmed God’s calling. She celebrated God’s work. She spoke blessing instead of doubt. She chose encouragement instead of criticism. What a beautiful picture of spiritual mentoring! So what makes an Elizabeth? Elizabeth teaches us something that every Christian woman needs to hear. A mentor isn’t someone who has all the answers. A mentor is someone who helps another person see God’s faithfulness more clearly. Elizabeth didn’t make Mary’s calling possible.

Mentor’s Role in Affirmation

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:05:12 – 00:05:35]:
God did. But Elizabeth confirmed what God was already doing. Sometimes that’s exactly what another woman needs. Not someone to solve her problems. Not someone to tell her what to do. She needs someone to say, I see God’s hand in your life. I believe He will be faithful. Keep trusting Him.

The Power of Encouraging Words

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:05:36 – 00:06:14]:
Those words have the power to strengthen weary hearts. Perhaps someone once spoke words like that over you, or perhaps you’re still waiting for an Elizabeth. Friend, don’t lose heart. Ask God to provide wise women Who will encourage your faith because He delights in answering prayers that draw us closer to Him. One of the things I appreciate most about Elizabeth is that she wasn’t competing with Mary. Think about her circumstances. Elizabeth herself was experiencing an incredible miracle in her latter years. She was carrying John the Baptist.

Celebration Over Comparison

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:06:15 – 00:07:09]:
Yet when Mary arrived, Elizabeth wasn’t focused on herself, She rejoiced over God’s work in someone else’s life. That kind of humility is beautiful. In our world, comparison comes so naturally. We compare ministries, families, careers, homes, even our spiritual growth. But God’s kingdom works differently. Elizabeth teaches us that another woman’s calling does not diminish our own. There is room in God’s kingdom for every woman to faithfully fulfill the unique purpose He has given her. What if Christian women became known for celebrating one another instead of comparing ourselves to one another? Imagine churches where women consistently spoke blessing over one another.

A Community of Blessing and Mentoring

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:07:10 – 00:08:01]:
Imagine mentoring relationships where wisdom was shared, Generously rather than guarded. Imagine younger women who felt genuinely encouraged instead of intimidated. That is the kind of community I believe God desires for His daughters. That’s the kind of community I desire to create. And perhaps it begins with one conversation, one prayer, one encouraging word, One faithful woman willing to say, I see God’s work in you. Perhaps today that woman can be you. One of the most beautiful things about Elizabeth’s story is that she didn’t mentor Mary from a position of superiority. She mentored her from a place of shared faith.

Shared Miracles and Human Hesitation

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:08:02 – 00:08:37]:
Both women were experiencing miracles. Both women were trusting God in circumstances they couldn’t fully explain. Both women were learning to surrender to His plan. Elizabeth simply had the advantage of walking with God a little longer. I think that’s important for us to remember. Sometimes we hesitate to mentor because we believe we need to know everything. We need to have all the answers, every Bible verse memorized, every struggle conquered. But that’s not what mentoring is.

Discipleship Defined

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:08:38 – 00:09:12]:
That is not what it’s about. Mentoring is simply walking with someone while keeping your eyes fixed on Christ. It’s saying, come walk with me as we follow Jesus together. That is discipleship. This reminds me of Paul’s words in Titus 2:3-5. Paul encourages older women to teach what is good and to train younger women. Notice what he is not saying. He is not saying older women should impress younger women.

Passing on Faith Across Generations

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:09:13 – 00:10:15]:
He’s not saying they should have perfect lives or they should build a following. He says they should teach what is good. Why? Because every generation needs the wisdom of the generation before it. Our culture often celebrates independence. Scripture celebrates interdependence. God designed His family so that faith would be passed from one generation to another, one conversation, one prayer, one relationship at a time. I think we’ve lost some of that in today’s busy world. Many women are longing for someone to simply ask, how is your soul? Someone who will be present with them, pray with them, encourage them, listen without judgment, hold what they share in confidence, and remind them of God’s faithfulness.

Mutual Encouragement in Mentoring

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:10:17 – 00:11:07]:
And perhaps that’s why so many women feel spiritually isolated, not because they don’t love Jesus, but because they are trying to walk the journey alone. One of the greatest misconceptions about mentoring is that only one person benefits, and I don’t believe that’s true for a moment. Every meaningful mentoring relationship changes both women. Certainly the younger woman gains wisdom, but the mentor receives something beautiful as well. She is reminded of God’s faithfulness. She witnesses fresh faith She sees prayers answered in another generation. She is encouraged as she watches someone else grow into the woman God created her to become. I’ve experienced that in my own life.

The Blessing of Being Mentored

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:11:08 – 00:11:59]:
Some of the women I’ve mentored probably believe I have encouraged them, and I certainly hope I have. But what they may not realize is how much they have encouraged and inspired me. Watching God transform another woman’s life strengthens my own faith. Hearing her testimony reminds me that God is still at work. Seeing her trust Him in difficult seasons often challenges me to trust Him more deeply in my own. That’s one of God’s beautiful designs. Mentoring isn’t about creating dependence, It’s about mutual encouragement as we grow together in Christ. As I reflect on my own journey, I find myself filled with gratitude.

Reflecting on the Gift of Mentors

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:11:59 – 00:12:42]:
I think about the women who prayed for me when I didn’t even know they were praying, women who patiently listened, women who gently corrected me when I needed wisdom, women who encouraged me to keep writing, to keep teaching, To keep trusting God’s call. Some of those conversations, they may have lasted only a few minutes. Others developed over years. But each one became part of God’s formation in my life. And because of their investment, I now feel a deep responsibility to invest in others. Not because I have arrived. Far from it. I am still learning.

Passing Grace On

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:12:42 – 00:13:09]:
I am still growing. I am still finding my way. And I am still being formed by Christ every single day. But I’ve learned enough to reach back and take another woman’s hand. That’s really what mentoring is. It’s receiving God’s grace and then passing it on. The Apostle Paul encouraged Timothy. Timothy became a leader who encouraged others.

Faith Through Generations

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:13:10 – 00:13:51]:
The Gospel has always spread from life to life, from generation to generation. Mentoring works the same way. We receive, we grow, we give, and someone else continues the journey. They pass the baton. I often say that mentoring is one of the most beautiful expressions of discipleship because it reminds us that faith was never meant to stop with us. It is meant to be shared, passed on, lived out in community. That is why mentoring matters so deeply to me. It isn’t simply something I do; it is part of who God has called me to become.

The Invitation of Spiritual Formation

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:13:52 – 00:15:05]:
As women who are being spiritually formed into the likeness of Christ, we are invited to help one another grow, not into our own image, but into His. And perhaps that is the greatest gift we can ever offer another woman, because it weaves together our pilgrimage, spiritual formation, mentoring, and passing the faith to the next generation. And as we come to close today’s conversation, I want to leave you With a very simple but profound thought. I believe every Christian woman is both someone’s Mary and someone’s Elizabeth. I’ve been the recipient of both. A Mary from my days living in Miami Shores, Florida, when a remarkable leader and a woman of faith looked at me and saw something in me that I could not see for myself. And she reached down and she brought me up. And I’ll never forget her words to me.

Memories of Being Mary and Elizabeth

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:15:06 – 00:16:13]:
She looked at me and said, you have amazing leadership skills. And I was a young 35-year-old mother of 3 who thought anything But, but Mary looked at me and she acknowledged, she saw, and she lifted me up. And that was a beautiful mentoring relationship. And now here I am back in Central Florida, and I have my very own Elizabeth who pours into me and mentors me and advises me. And she sees me. I sometimes joke that she could have been my older sister, but I am so grateful for these women, and there are many, many more. And there are women who have walked further down the road than we have, women whose wisdom we need, women whose prayers strengthen us, whose lives quietly remind us that God is faithful through Every season. These are our Elizabeths.

Becoming an Elizabeth for Others

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:16:14 – 00:16:58]:
And at the very same time, there are women who are just beginning their journey, women who need someone to notice them, to see them, to encourage them, to remind them that God has not forgotten them, to reassure them that uncertainty does not mean God is absent, to pray with them when their own prayers seem difficult to find. For them, perhaps we are becoming an Elizabeth. I don’t think this happens by accident. I believe it is one of God’s beautiful designs for His Church. Faith is meant to be shared. Hope is meant to be passed on. Wisdom is meant to be given away. We don’t walk alone.

The Pilgrimage of Faith

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:16:59 – 00:17:26]:
One of the themes I return to often is that the Christian life is a pilgrimage. We are continually becoming the women God created us to be. Pilgrims were never intended to travel alone. They needed companions. They needed encouragement. They needed someone who knew the road. And they also needed opportunities to help those walking behind them. Our spiritual journey is no different.

Seasons of Giving and Receiving

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:17:26 – 00:18:03]:
There are seasons when we lean on others. There are seasons when others will lean on us. Both are gifts of God’s grace. And as I look back over my own life, I can clearly see the fingerprints of faithful women. Some mentored me through seasons of uncertainty, desperation, pain. Others challenged me to trust God more deeply. Some encouraged me to use the gifts God had entrusted to me, even when I doubted myself. They probably do not realize how profoundly they shaped my life.

The Lasting Impact of Mentoring

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:18:04 – 00:18:51]:
And perhaps that’s the beauty of faithful mentoring— its greatest impact is often seen years later. The seeds they planted in me have continued to bear fruit. Their investment became part of my calling. That is one of the reasons I have such a deep passion For mentoring women today. Not because I have all the answers, not because I have somehow arrived, but because someone once reached back and took my hand. Now I have the privilege and the honor of extending my hand to someone else. That is the rhythm of discipleship: receive, grow, share. Share, repeat.

Seeking and Becoming an Elizabeth

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:18:52 – 00:19:41]:
And perhaps today you find yourself longing for an Elizabeth. If that’s you, begin by asking the Lord to bring a wise, mature woman into your life. Then remain open. She may not appear in the way you expect. She may be a Bible study teacher, a trusted friend, a former teacher, a woman in your church. Someone who quietly lives a life that reflects Christ. Pray for discernment, pray for humility to receive wisdom, and don’t be afraid to take the first step by simply asking if she’d be willing to meet for coffee or pray with you. Many meaningful mentoring relationships begin with one simple conversation.

Everyday Mentoring

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:19:42 – 00:20:25]:
And if you’ve been walking with Christ for many years, perhaps God is inviting you to become an Elizabeth. You don’t need a formal program. You don’t need a title. You simply need a willing heart. Mentoring often looks less like teaching from a platform and more like inviting someone into your everyday life. Reading Scripture together, praying together, sharing a meal, Listening well, offering encouragement, pointing one another back to Jesus. This is how faith is passed from generation to generation. And I’d like to leave you with a few questions so that you can take them into your quiet time this week.

Quiet Reflection Questions

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:20:26 – 00:21:55]:
Pause and invite the Holy Spirit to search your heart. Ask, who has been an Elizabeth in your life? And have you thanked her for the ways she strengthened your faith? Ask, am I intentionally learning from women who are farther along in their walk with Christ? Is God inviting me to become an Elizabeth for someone else? What gifts, experiences, or lessons has God entrusted to me that I could share with another woman? Remember, mentoring isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about faithfully sharing what God has taught you. And lastly, ask yourself, what legacy of faith are you leaving? Not a legacy measured by accomplishments or recognition, but one measured by the women who love Jesus more because they walked with you. That is a legacy that lasts for eternity. Won’t you pray with me? Heavenly Father, thank You for the faithful women You’ve woven into our lives who have shaped our faith with their love and obedience. Thank You for the Elizabeths who encouraged us and reminded us of Your faithfulness. Lord, give us grateful hearts that remember the women You’ve used to form us, and now prepare us to become women who invest faithfully in others.

A Prayer for Mentoring and Community

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:21:56 – 00:22:34]:
May our homes, churches, and communities be places where women strengthen one another with wisdom, kindness, and truth. And as we continue this pilgrimage of faith, remind us that we never walk alone. You go before us, Your Spirit dwells within us, and You surround us with companions who help us keep our eyes on Jesus. In Jesus’ precious name we pray. Amen. Amen. Friend, remember, you are deeply loved by the Father. You are continually being formed by His Spirit, and you were never meant to walk this journey alone.

A Final Encouragement

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:22:35 – 00:23:04]:
So this week, thank God for the Elizabeths He has placed in your life. Reach out to one of them if you can and ask Him a simple question: Lord, who are You inviting me to encourage? You may discover that someone is waiting for the very encouragement God has already given you. Until next time, keep reflecting His life, one faithful step at a time. Grace and peace.

More about Reflecting Life: A Christian Woman’s Journey of Faith

In today’s hustle-driven culture, even faith has become something to perform. Too many Christian women are living disconnected from their true identity in Christ. Constantly striving, doubting, and searching for belonging in places that can’t truly fulfill them. But you were created to be loved, chosen, and formed by grace, not to earn your worth through endless doing.

Welcome to Reflecting Life, A Christian Woman’s Journey of Faith, where Christian women can exhale, reflect, and remember whose they are.

Hosted by Biblical mentor and spiritual formation coach Dr. Robin Revis Pyke, this podcast features real women sharing real stories of faith, struggle, and hope, along with thoughtful conversations that gently point you back to God’s truth. This is companionship on the journey and not cheerleading from the sidelines.

This show will deliver Scripture-grounded teaching, honest storytelling, and gentle formation practices to help you move from striving to rootedness, from performance to presence with God. If you’re spiritually restless and craving depth over surface inspiration, you’re in the right place.

We’ll answer questions like:

  • How do I find my identity in Christ?
  • What is God’s purpose for my life?
  • How do I hear God’s voice clearly?
  • Am I enough in God’s eyes?
  • What is spiritual formation, and why does it matter?
  • Why do I feel spiritually burned out?
  • How do I know if God loves me?
  • How can I find purpose after 40 as a Christian woman?
  • What does it look like to live from grace instead of performance?
  • How do I navigate between seasons of faith?

This podcast is for Christian women in in-between seasons who love God but are wrestling with transition, calling, identity, or a sense of belonging. Whether you’re feeling spiritually restless, frustrated by performance-driven faith, quietly wrestling with obedience and waiting, or simply craving deeper formation, this space was made for you.

If you’re ready to stop striving for acceptance and start resting in the truth that you’re already formed in Christ, this podcast will give you the encouragement, Biblical truth, and sacred space to do just that.

Come as you are. Pause, listen, and reflect honestly on where God is meeting you in this season.
