Serving From Love, Not Pressure: What Jesus Modeled for Women

There is a quiet exhaustion many Christian women carry, the kind that doesn’t show up on the outside because the yeses keep coming, commitments keep getting honored, and from where everyone else is standing, everything looks faithful. But somewhere underneath, joy has thinned. Peace has gone missing. And the question that surfaces, usually late at night or in a rare quiet moment, is not “Am I doing enough?” but something harder to admit: “Why does all this serving feel so heavy?”

If any of that sounds familiar, you are in the right place. Not to add another thing to your list, but to sit with you honestly, and to offer the reminder that serving from love looks very different than serving under pressure, and God cares about the difference.

Dr. Robin opens Matthew 20:28 and returns to the life of Jesus, not only to what He did, but to how He served. Along the way, Dr. Robin shares from her own life, from years of ministry, education, and leadership, and what she has learned about the quiet drift from joyful obedience into unhealthy obligation.

What we explore in this episode:

  • How to tell the difference between serving from love and serving from pressure or fear of disappointing others
  • What Jesus modeled about boundaries, including the moments He withdrew from the crowds to pray and stayed anchored to His assignment rather than to people’s expectations
  • Why over-functioning is not the same as compassion, and how to recognize the pattern in your own life
  • What it looks like to serve from overflow instead of depletion, and how abiding in Christ reshapes the way we lead and love
  • The reflection questions Dr. Robin returns to often, including “Lord, is this mine?” and “Am I serving from love or fear?”

This episode is for the woman who has been saying yes for a long time and is beginning to sense that something has to shift. It is for the woman who has been asking what boundaries look like in practice and who wants to understand how to say no without guilt as an act of faithfulness rather than failure. It is for the woman who is ready to trade people pleasing for a deeper rest in her identity in Christ.

“You cannot build a peaceful life while making decisions under pressure. Pressure rushes, peace listens.”

– Dr. Robin

If this reflection met you where you are, share it with a friend or a woman in ministry who may be carrying more than she was ever meant to bear. And if you are new to Reflecting Life, this is a quiet space for Christian women who are ready to stop striving and start abiding. Follow the podcast so you do not miss the next conversation.

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:00:01 – 00:00:33]:
Welcome. I’m Dr. Robin Revis Pyke, and this is Reflecting Life: A Christian Woman’s Journey of Faith. Here, you will learn what it truly means to live from your identity in Christ. We’ll explore how Christian women, just like you, navigate the in-between seasons using biblical truths and honest conversations. This podcast is your safe space to pause, reflect, and remember who God says you are. So come as you are. You are loved, chosen, and created by grace, and I am so glad you are here.

Starting the Journey of Faith

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:00:34 – 00:01:20]:
So let’s start this journey together. Hello, friend, and welcome to Reflecting Life. I’m Dr. Robin Rivas Pike, your companion on this journey of becoming more like Christ, and I want to thank you for joining me today. I truly believe our spiritual journey is a sacred unfolding. Shaped by the experiences God allows and the choices we make in response to His voice. Every season, whether filled with joy, waiting, uncertainty, or growth, is an invitation to know God more deeply and allow Him to transform our hearts. Today we’re talking about something that I believe many Christian women quietly carry but rarely talk about.

Serving from Love or Pressure?

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:01:21 – 00:02:25]:
Are you serving from love or from pressure? Because if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably spent years saying yes, stepping in, filling the gaps, helping where help was needed, organizing, leading, encouraging, mentoring, volunteering, and serving, just to name a few. And none of those things are wrong, In fact, they’re beautiful expressions of Christ’s love. But somewhere along the way, many of us cross an invisible line. We move from serving out of joyful obedience to serving from unhealthy obligation. We become exhausted, we become resentful, we quietly lose ourselves. And then we wonder why the joy we once had has slowly disappeared. Today, I want us to look at the life of Jesus, not simply at what He did, but how He served. Because Jesus never served from insecurity.

The Example of Jesus’ Service

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:02:26 – 00:03:30]:
He never served to earn approval. He never served out of fear of disappointing others. Jesus served from perfect alignment with the Father. Anchored, assured, and fully at rest in who He was and why He was sent. And I believe that is His invitation for us as well: to serve not from striving, but from identity; not from pressure, but from peace; not from proving, but from abiding in the One who calls us His own. Matthew 20:28 tells us, Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. Jesus came to serve, but His service was never driven by a fear of insecurity or disapproval. It was rooted in love, and there’s a profound difference.

Personal Reflection on Service and Leadership

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:03:31 – 00:04:20]:
Over the past several years, I found myself reflecting deeply on leadership and service. Many of you know that I have served in ministry, education, nonprofit leadership, community organizations, and more recently on a local board. I love serving. It’s one of the ways God has wired me. I genuinely enjoy helping people grow. I enjoy bringing order where there may be chaos. I enjoy encouraging others. But I also had to ask myself a difficult question: Was I serving because God was asking me to, or was I serving out of fear of disappointing others? Those are 2 very different motivations.

Carrying Unassigned Responsibilities

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:04:21 – 00:05:10]:
And if I’m honest, there have been seasons where I quietly carried responsibilities that that God never asked me to carry, not because I didn’t love Him, but because I struggled to let go. Perhaps you understand that feeling as well. But then I remember Jesus had boundaries. Sometimes we picture Jesus as endlessly available, always saying yes, meeting every need. But that’s actually not what Scripture shows us. Jesus healed many people, but not everyone. He taught the crowds, yet He often walked away from them. Jesus loved people deeply, yet He regularly withdrew to lonely places to pray.

Jesus’ Boundaries and Staying Faithful

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:05:11 – 00:06:08]:
In Mark 1, after healing many people, the crowds came searching for Him again, and the disciples said to Him, Everyone is looking for you! Can you imagine that? Everyone wanted something from Him. And yet Jesus didn’t return simply because people expected Him to. Instead, He said, Let us go somewhere else so I can preach there also. Jesus remained faithful to His assignment, not to people’s expectations. And my friend, that is incredibly freeing because many of us have confused availability with faithfulness. However, Jesus never did. I think there’s another lesson that I believe many Christian women need to hear, to be reminded of. Compassion is biblical.

The Trap of Over-Functioning

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:06:09 – 00:06:45]:
Over-functioning is not. Now, perhaps you’ve never heard that phrase before. I know it very well. Over-functioning happens when we continually carry responsibilities that belong to someone else. We rescue, we fix, we step in before others have had the opportunity to grow. We may absorb the emotional burdens that aren’t ours to carry, certainly if you’re a highly sensitive person. And if you’ve been following my podcast, You’ve heard this before. We become the dependable one, the responsible one, the one everyone calls.

When Praise Turns to Exhaustion

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:06:46 – 00:07:23]:
At first, people praise us. You always know what to do, or I don’t know what we’d do without you. Or maybe you’ve heard, thank you so much, you never let us down. And let’s admit it, those words feel good. But over time, something begins to happen. We become emotionally exhausted. We start to lose our peace, our Shalom. We may begin to feel responsible for everyone else’s outcomes, and without realizing it, our identity slowly becomes connected to being needed.

God’s Deeper Questions About Motivation

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:07:24 – 00:08:26]:
Let’s unpack that for a moment. The beautiful thing about spiritual formation is that God is always more interested in our hearts Than our performance. He gently asks questions we often avoid, such as, Robin, what is your motivation for saying yes? What are your intentions? And what is keeping you from saying no? What might you be afraid of happening if you step back? Now, those aren’t questions of condemnation. They’re invitations. And you know me, I love invitations. Because sometimes beneath our service, we discovered things we didn’t realize were there. A fear of disappointing people, a fear of conflict, a longing to be appreciated, to be needed, and to feel valuable. Perhaps we’ve simply lived our whole lives believing our worth comes from what we accomplish.

Our Worth Was Established at the Cross

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:08:28 – 00:09:39]:
But Scripture reminds us that our worth was established long before we ever served. It was established at the cross. You were already loved, already chosen, already accepted. You don’t have to earn what Christ has already given. One practice I’ve been learning is regularly praying a very simple prayer. Lord, what is motivating my service? I’m not asking the question, Lord, should I serve? But what is happening inside my heart while I serve? Because God cares about both. Perhaps you should ask yourself today, am I serving from love or fear? From calling or compulsion? From peace or pressure? And those questions can reveal a great deal about where we are spiritually. Because remember, not every opportunity is an assignment.

Not Every Opportunity Comes From God

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:09:40 – 00:10:32]:
One of the most freeing lessons I’ve learned is this: not every opportunity comes from God. Sometimes wonderful opportunities simply aren’t our assignment. As women, we often see every need, and because we care so deeply, we assume we’re supposed to meet it. But Jesus didn’t heal every person. He didn’t visit every village. He remained faithful to what the Father had given Him. That’s wisdom. Perhaps one of the most spiritual questions we can ask is, Lord, is this mine? Because sometimes the most faithful response is yes, and sometimes the most faithful response is no.

Evaluating Decisions Through Alignment

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:10:33 – 00:11:34]:
I often encourage the women I mentor to evaluate decisions through alignment rather than obligation. Questions such as, does this align with God’s calling for this season? Will this yes strengthen my walk with Christ? Does it support my family? Does it reflect my values? Or am I simply trying to keep everyone happy? Friend, you cannot build a peaceful life While making decisions under pressure. Pressure rushes, peace listens. Jesus lived from purpose— steady, rooted, and aligned with the Father— not urgency. And there is a profound difference. Urgency demands reaction. Purpose invites discernment. One drains the soul, The other anchors it.

Boundaries Are Biblical, Not Selfish

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:11:35 – 00:12:18]:
And let’s talk about boundaries for a moment. Many Christian women struggle with guilt whenever boundaries are mentioned. But boundaries aren’t selfish. They’re biblical. A boundary simply says, I will love you, but I cannot carry what God has not asked me to carry. Sometimes boundaries look like stepping away from a committee, Sometimes they look like allowing another person to experience the natural consequences of their choices. Sometimes they look like limiting emotional access. And sometimes they simply sound like, I can’t commit to that right now.

Love and Boundaries Go Together

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:12:19 – 00:13:00]:
You know, Jesus never manipulated people, and He did not allow Himself to be manipulated. He loved with incredible compassion while remaining anchored in truth. He remained focused on His mission. Love and boundaries are not opposites. Healthy love requires healthy boundaries. Imagine how different our lives would feel if we served from overflow instead of depletion. If we spent more time abiding rather than striving. If we spent more time listening rather than proving.

Abide in Christ, Not in Performance

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:13:01 – 00:13:54]:
More time receiving God’s love than trying to earn it through productivity. Jesus tells us in John 15, abide in Me. He doesn’t say, perform for Me. He says, remain. Everything flows from that relationship. When we remain connected to Christ, our service becomes healthier, our leadership becomes gentler, our hearts become freer, and we stop confusing burnout with faithfulness. When we remain deeply rooted in Christ, Our service becomes an overflow of His strength rather than our own. Our leadership becomes more Christlike because it is shaped by His humility.

Letting Christ Reshape Our Motivation

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:13:55 – 00:15:35]:
Our hearts become freer because they are anchored in His love, not our performance. And we stop mistaking exhaustion for obedience or burnout for faithfulness. For it is in abiding— remaining, lingering, dwelling— that Christ reshapes the inner life. He teaches us to lead from communion rather than compulsion, to serve from surrender rather than striving, and to move through our days not as burden carriers but as beloved daughters walking in step with the Spirit. As we close today, I’d like to leave you with a few reflection questions to take into prayer this week. I want to encourage you to sit quietly with the Lord and ask: Where am I serving from pressure instead of love? Have I taken responsibility for something You never assigned to me? Where am I over-functioning? What expectations am I carrying that You never placed upon me? And lastly, what would it look like to serve from overflow instead of exhaustion? Sit with these questions, reflect on them, and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you. And friend, if you are weary today, God is not asking you to become everything for everyone. He is inviting you to become more like Christ.

Serving Less, Loving More

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:15:36 – 00:16:16]:
That may actually mean serving less so you can love more deeply. It may mean releasing responsibilities that were never yours to take on. It may mean learning to say no with grace. It may mean perhaps simply resting. Because your value has never been determined by how much you accomplish. Your identity rests securely in Christ, and when your identity is secure, your service becomes an overflow of His love. Let us pray. Heavenly Father, thank You for the perfect example of Jesus.

Prayer for Spirit-Led Service

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:16:18 – 00:17:06]:
Thank You that He showed us What humble, faithful, Spirit-led service truly looks like. Search our hearts today and reveal any place where fear, peer pressure, people-pleasing, or striving have become our motivation instead of love. Teach us to abide in You, to remain in You. Give us wisdom to recognize what You have called us to carry and the courage to release what You have not. Lord, help us establish healthy boundaries that honor You and protect the relationships You’ve entrusted to us. May our lives reflect the heart of Christ, full of compassion, truth, humility, and peace. In Jesus’ precious name we pray. Amen.

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:17:08 – 00:17:58]:
Thank you for joining me today on Reflecting Life, and if today’s conversation encouraged you, I would love for you to take a moment to follow the podcast and share this episode with a friend or a woman in ministry who may be carrying more than she was ever meant to bear. And if this message stirred something in your heart, I invite you to spend time this week asking the Lord, am I serving as Jesus served? Until next time, remember, you do not have to prove your worth through endless service. Your identity is secure in Christ, and from that place of belonging, may you serve with humility, wisdom, healthy boundaries, and complete dependence on the Father. Peace and grace.

More about Reflecting Life: A Christian Woman’s Journey of Faith

In today’s hustle-driven culture, even faith has become something to perform. Too many Christian women are living disconnected from their true identity in Christ. Constantly striving, doubting, and searching for belonging in places that can’t truly fulfill them. But you were created to be loved, chosen, and formed by grace, not to earn your worth through endless doing.

Welcome to Reflecting Life, A Christian Woman’s Journey of Faith, where Christian women can exhale, reflect, and remember whose they are.

Hosted by Biblical mentor and spiritual formation coach Dr. Robin Revis Pyke, this podcast features real women sharing real stories of faith, struggle, and hope, along with thoughtful conversations that gently point you back to God’s truth. This is companionship on the journey and not cheerleading from the sidelines.

This show will deliver Scripture-grounded teaching, honest storytelling, and gentle formation practices to help you move from striving to rootedness, from performance to presence with God. If you’re spiritually restless and craving depth over surface inspiration, you’re in the right place.

We’ll answer questions like:

  • How do I find my identity in Christ?
  • What is God’s purpose for my life?
  • How do I hear God’s voice clearly?
  • Am I enough in God’s eyes?
  • What is spiritual formation, and why does it matter?
  • Why do I feel spiritually burned out?
  • How do I know if God loves me?
  • How can I find purpose after 40 as a Christian woman?
  • What does it look like to live from grace instead of performance?
  • How do I navigate between seasons of faith?

This podcast is for Christian women in in-between seasons who love God but are wrestling with transition, calling, identity, or a sense of belonging. Whether you’re feeling spiritually restless, frustrated by performance-driven faith, quietly wrestling with obedience and waiting, or simply craving deeper formation, this space was made for you.

If you’re ready to stop striving for acceptance and start resting in the truth that you’re already formed in Christ, this podcast will give you the encouragement, Biblical truth, and sacred space to do just that.

Come as you are. Pause, listen, and reflect honestly on where God is meeting you in this season.

Spiritual maturity is not something we manufacture through greater effort. It is formed as we remain rooted in Christ through Scripture, prayer, surrender, and everyday obedience.

The fruit comes from the connection.
