Reflecting Life Podcast | Episode 05 - How the Fruit of the Spirit Grows in Your Life

How the Fruit of the Spirit Grows in Your Life

You already know the list. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. You have read it, memorized it, maybe even written it on a notecard somewhere. But if you are honest, there are seasons where that list feels more like a standard to meet than a reality you are living.

What if the fruit of the Spirit was never meant to be something you produce? What if it was always meant to be something you receive?

This episode is an invitation to stop striving and start abiding.

In this episode, Dr. Robin Revis Pyke walks through one of the most beloved passages in Scripture, Galatians 5:22-23, and invites us into a deeper, more honest conversation about what it means to bear fruit as a Christian woman. This is not a checklist. It is not a performance. It is the quiet, steady work of the Holy Spirit forming something real in us, often in the unseen moments we would never think to highlight.

Dr. Robin also introduces a concept she calls bitter fruit. What begins to grow in our hearts when we drift from the vine? And she reflects on the process of pruning: why it can feel lonely and confusing, and why it is never punishment but always preparation.

What we explore in this episode:

  • What the fruit of the Spirit is, and why it is evidence of formation rather than a measure of spiritual performance
  • The difference between the appearance of fruit and fruit that is genuinely rooted in Christ
  • What bitter fruit is, how it grows, and why even faithful women can find themselves producing it in certain seasons
  • The pruning process, what it looks like when God removes something from your life, why it can feel uncomfortable, and why it is always purposeful
  • What abiding in Christ has to do with spiritual growth, and why fruit grows from connection, not from effort
  • How the character of Chris, His love, peace, patience, and gentleness, begins to quietly shape the way we move through everyday life
  • A gentle closing prayer for any woman who feels like she is still waiting for the fruit she hoped to see

This episode is for the Christian woman who wants her life to reflect Christ, not just her beliefs. It is for the woman who has been walking with God faithfully and yet senses that something is still being formed in her. It is for the woman in a season of pruning who needs the reminder that God does not remove without purpose, and that what feels like loss may actually be preparation.

Fruit takes time, but God is patient. And He is always working beneath the surface.

“A woman who walks with Christ becomes a reflection of his character. Her life begins to bear fruit that nourishes others.”

– Dr. Robin

Pausing to Reflect: God’s Work in Our Lives

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:00:37 – 00:01:19]:
[00:00:37] Hello friends, and welcome. [00:00:40] This podcast is a quiet space where we pause in the middle of everyday life to reflect on what God is forming in us. [00:00:48] Because life is busy. [00:00:49] It’s full of responsibilities, relationships, expectations, and sometimes even hidden struggles. [00:00:57] And yet, right there in the midst of ordinary life, God is doing his most meaningful work. [00:01:03] And today we are reflecting on something deeply important for every Christian woman. [00:01:09] The fruit of the Spirit. [00:01:11] Not the appearance of fruit, not the performance of fruit, but the real fruit that grows when a life is rooted in Christ.

What Is the Fruit of the Spirit?

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:01:20 – 00:02:14]:
[00:01:20] In Galatians 5, verses 22-23 we read, but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. [00:01:36] Against such things there is no law. [00:01:40] Let’s take a moment and let those words settle into our hearts. [00:01:46] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. [00:01:58] Against such things there is no law. [00:02:02] These are not simply personality traits. [00:02:05] They are not spiritual checkboxes. [00:02:08] The fruit of the Spirit is evidence of the Spirit of God at work within us.

Fruit as Evidence of Formation

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:02:17 – 00:03:01]:
[00:02:17] I believe fruit is the evidence of formation. [00:02:21] When we think about fruit, we think of a tree or a vine, and we understand that fruit doesn’t appear overnight. [00:02:29] It grows slowly, quietly, gradually. [00:02:34] In the same way, the fruit of the Spirit is not something we manufacture through effort. [00:02:40] It grows as we walk with the Holy Spirit and allow God to form our hearts. [00:02:47] It is the result of life flowing from the inside out. [00:02:52] This is why spiritual formation matters, because faith is not just about what we believe. [00:02:59] It is about who we are becoming.

Navigating Appearances and True Transformation

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:03:02 – 00:03:38]:
[00:03:02] As Christian women, we often live in a culture where that emphasizes appearances. [00:03:08] We can feel immense pressure to look like we have everything together, to present a polished life, a perfect faith, or a flawless image. [00:03:19] But God is not concerned with our appearances. [00:03:23] God looks at the heart. [00:03:25] He looks at our heart. [00:03:27] He is not asking us to perform faith. [00:03:30] He is inviting us to be transformed by Him. [00:03:34] Real fruit grows when our lives are surrendered to God.

The Quiet Growth and Evidence of God’s Work

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:03:38 – 00:04:37]:
[00:03:38] And often that growth happens quietly in the unseen moments of prayer. [00:03:45] Obedience, humility and trust. [00:03:50] Take a moment to ask yourself, where in my life do I see evidence of God forming His fruit in me? [00:03:59] And perhaps ask yourself this question, where might God be inviting me to grow? [00:04:06] Scripture tells us the Spirit produces fruit in our lives. [00:04:10] But we also know that when we are not walking in step with the Spirit, something else can grow. [00:04:17] Instead of love, we may see resentment instead of peace, anxiety instead of patience, frustration. [00:04:26] In other words, the opposite of good fruit. [00:04:30] Well, I refer to this as bitter fruit. [00:04:33] Bitter fruit grows when our hearts become tangled in comparison.

Understanding Bitter Fruit and Its Causes

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:04:38 – 00:05:38]:
[00:04:38] Pride, control, resentment, or unhealed wounds. [00:04:42] And here’s the truth we don’t often talk about. [00:04:46] Even faithful believers can produce bitter fruit when something in our lives is left unattended before God. [00:04:55] But the beautiful thing about God’s grace is that he never leaves us there. [00:05:01] The Holy Spirit gently convicts us, corrects us, and invites us back into a life that reflects Christ. [00:05:10] Because the goal of the Christian life is not simply believing in Jesus, it is becoming more like Him. [00:05:19] There’s another part of fruit bearing that we often pruning. [00:05:25] Pruning is the process of cutting away something that may even appear healthy so that the plant can produce better fruit, much like my limelight hydrangeas that beautifully blossom each spring.

The Power of Pruning: God’s Preparation for Growth

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:05:39 – 00:06:36]:
[00:05:39] However, if I did not prune them in February or I don’t believe we would see much growth or as many beautiful blooms. [00:05:49] But the pruning assures me of abundant blooms at just the right time. [00:05:55] This principle is beautifully illustrated in the gospel of John 15, where Jesus speaks about the vine and the branches. [00:06:04] He tells us that God prunes the branches so that they will bear more fruit. [00:06:10] And if we’re honest, pruning can be difficult. [00:06:14] Sometimes God asks us to release something we enjoy. [00:06:18] Sometimes he calls us to surrender something we’ve grown attached to. [00:06:23] It could be a relationship that is pulling us away from Him, a habit that distracts our heart, an ambition that has quietly become an idol, or even the desire for approval from others.

Pruning for God’s Best

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:06:38 – 00:07:13]:
[00:06:38] Pruning doesn’t always mean something sinful. [00:06:41] Sometimes it means letting go of something that simply isn’t God’s best for us. [00:06:47] And when pruning happens, it can feel uncomfortable. [00:06:51] But pruning is not punishment. [00:06:54] It is preparation for greater fruit. [00:06:57] Abundant fruit. [00:07:00] To me, that is so exciting, because God never removes something without purpose. [00:07:07] He prunes because he sees the potential for a life that reflects Christ even more beautifully.

Trusting God in the Process of Surrender

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:07:14 – 00:08:36]:
[00:07:14] Take a quiet moment and consider, is there anything in your life God may be inviting you to surrender so that better fruit can grow Ask the Holy Spirit to gently reveal everything, anything that may need pruning. [00:07:33] I often pray for God to remove anything from me that hinders his best for me, including anything in my life that distracts me or is toxic to my journey. [00:07:45] Have you ever been in a situation where you want to belong, to join in, or to remain? [00:07:51] But deep down you feel a check in your spirit and you realize that that thing, event, moment or relationship is hindering your journey? [00:08:04] Pruning is hard, my friends. [00:08:07] Pruning is really hard and sometimes it can be painful. [00:08:13] Pruning can feel lonely, unfair and confusing. [00:08:17] But if what we are seeking is not aligned with God’s will, pruning must take place. [00:08:24] And if our desire is to bear fruit that reflects Christ, then we must submit to the process of pruning. [00:08:33] Let’s return again to the fruit listed in Galatians.

The Fruit of the Spirit: Living Out Christ’s Character

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:08:37 – 00:09:18]:
[00:08:37] Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. [00:08:48] These qualities reflect the character of Christ Himself. [00:08:54] When the Spirit is shaping us, these attributes begin to influence how we live. [00:09:01] Love changes the way we treat people. [00:09:03] Joy gives us strength even in difficult seasons. [00:09:08] Peace anchors us when life feels uncertain. [00:09:12] Patience softens our reactions. [00:09:16] Kindness opens doors for ministry.

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:09:19 – 00:10:05]:
[00:09:19] Faithfulness steadies us and our commitments. [00:09:23] Gentleness reflects humility and self control well, that helps us live with wisdom and restraint. [00:09:33] This fruit becomes a witness to the world around us, not through loud declarations, but through quiet consistency. [00:09:41] A woman who walks with Christ becomes a reflection of his character. [00:09:47] Her life begins to bear fruit that nourishes others. [00:09:53] I love that. [00:09:56] A woman who walks with Christ becomes a reflection of his character. [00:10:02] Her life begins to bear fruit that nourishes others.

How to Cultivate Spiritual Fruit: Abiding in Christ

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:10:09 – 00:11:15]:
[00:10:09] Who are you nourishing and how do we cultivate this fruit? [00:10:17] Jesus gives us the answer in one simple word, abide. [00:10:23] I talked about abiding in episode four and the importance of living connected to Christ in everyday life. [00:10:31] Fruit grows naturally when a branch remains connected to the vine, and the same way spiritual fruit grows when our lives remain connected to Christ. [00:10:43] Abiding happens through prayer, scripture, worship, obedience and trust. [00:10:52] It happens when we make space for God in the midst of everyday life. [00:10:57] Not when we’re striving, not when we’re performing, but simply walking with Him. [00:11:05] And over time, something beautiful happens without even realizing it. [00:11:12] Our lives begin to reflect the presence of Christ.

Encouragement for the Journey

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:11:19 – 00:11:57]:
[00:11:19] Friend, if you feel like your life isn’t producing the fruit you hope for, be encouraged. [00:11:25] Fruit takes time. [00:11:27] God is patient. [00:11:29] He is always working beneath the surface. [00:11:33] If pruning is happening in your life right now trust that God is preparing you for something deeper and more meaningful. [00:11:44] Stay connected to the vine. [00:11:46] Stay rooted in his love and allow the Holy Spirit to form in you a life that reflects Christ. [00:11:56] Let us pray together.

Prayer for Spiritual Formation and Fruitfulness

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:11:58 – 00:12:30]:
[00:11:58] Heavenly Father, thank you for the work you are doing in our hearts. [00:12:02] Thank you that you are not finished with us. [00:12:05] Lord, help us to remain connected to you so that our lives may bear the fruit of your spirit. [00:12:10] And if there is anything in our lives that needs pruning, give us the courage to surrender it to you. [00:12:15] Form in us hearts that reflect your love, your peace and your character. [00:12:20] May our lives bear good fruit that blesses others and glorifies you. [00:12:26] In your holy and precious name we pray. [00:12:29] Amen.

Closing Thoughts

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:12:31 – 00:12:59]:
[00:12:31] Thank you for joining me today on Reflecting Life. [00:12:34] And if today’s message spoke to you, I invite you to pass it along to a friend who may need a little hope today and until the next time. [00:12:44] Remember, God is not just fixing your life, he is forming your life. [00:12:50] And through His Spirit, may the fruits we produce truly mirror his love and goodness. [00:12:57] Until next time. [00:12:58] Keep on shining.

More about Reflecting Life: A Christian Woman’s Journey of Faith

  • How do I know if God loves me?
  • How can I find purpose after 40 as a Christian woman?
  • What does it look like to live from grace instead of performance?

Spiritual maturity is not something we manufacture through greater effort. It is formed as we remain rooted in Christ through Scripture, prayer, surrender, and everyday obedience.

The fruit comes from the connection.

So before asking, “What do I need to do better?” ask: “Am I staying close to Jesus?”
