Growing Faith Through Trails When God Feels Silent

Growing Faith Through Trials When God Feels Silent

There is a season most Christian women know well, even if they have never named it out loud. It is the season when faith feels fragile, when prayers have gone on long enough that the waiting has begun to feel like silence, and when the honest question rising up is not “why is God testing me?” but something quieter and harder: “Is He still working?”

If that is where you are, this reflection is for you. Not to rush you past the stretching, but to sit with you in it, and to offer the reminder that growing faith through trials is exactly what God is doing when the waiting feels the longest.

In this episode, Dr. Robin Revis Pyke opens James 1:2-4 and 1 Samuel and returns to the story of Hannah, a woman who kept showing up before God with nothing polished to offer, only the honest weight of what she was carrying. Along the way, Dr. Robin shares from her own life too, and what she learned about prayer, trust, and God’s presence when His answer looked different than the one she had prayed for.

What we explore in this episode:

  • How Hannah’s story speaks to anyone carrying a quiet ache, the kind born of longing, unanswered prayer, and waiting that has gone on too long
  • What spiritual growth through waiting looks like from the inside, and why it rarely feels like growth while it is happening
  • How to trust God in difficult times when His answer looks different than the one you prayed for
  • What it means to pour out honestly before God, not with polished prayers, but with everything you are carrying

This episode is for the woman who has been asking what to do when prayers go unanswered, who has been in a season of loss, waiting, or uncertainty long enough that she has started to question what faith even means in the middle of it. It is for the woman who wants to understand biblical perseverance not as a theological concept but as something she can live.

“You don’t have to have polished prayers. You don’t have to hold it all together. Just come.”

– Dr. Robin

Mentioned Scriptures
James 1:2-4, 1 Samuel

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:00:00 – 00:00:41]:
[00:00:00] Hello and welcome. [00:00:02] Here on Reflecting Life. [00:00:03] We take time to pause in the midst of our busy lives to reflect on what God is doing inside us. [00:00:09] Because faith isn’t something we say we have. [00:00:13] It’s something we live and grow through, often in the quiet, unseen moments of life. [00:00:20] And today I want to talk about a topic that touches every Christian woman and at some point in her journey. [00:00:28] Test trials and the stretching of our faith. [00:00:33] We’ve all been there, haven’t we? [00:00:35] That season when life feels heavy, questions rise in our hearts and we wonder if God is still near.

God’s Presence in Trials

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:00:42 – 00:01:26]:
[00:00:42] But the truth is, God is not absent in these times. [00:00:46] In fact, he is often closest when our faith is being stretched. [00:00:53] Our focus Scripture today comes from James 1, 2, 4. [00:00:59] Consider it pure joy. [00:01:00] My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kind, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance, let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. [00:01:17] You see, trials are not punishment. [00:01:18] They are preparation. [00:01:21] When we hear the word trial, our minds often jump to hardship, loss or disappointment.

Trials as Preparation, Not Punishment

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:01:27 – 00:01:57]:
[00:01:27] But James invites us to see trials differently. [00:01:30] Not as punishment, not as abandonment, but as preparation. [00:01:35] God uses trials to shape us, strengthen us, and deepen our trust in Him. [00:01:42] Think about a muscle. [00:01:43] A muscle grows only when it is stretched. [00:01:47] When it is challenged and pushed beyond its comfort zone. [00:01:51] Faith works the same way. [00:01:54] If our faith is never stretched, it may never grow.

The Stretching and Testing of Faith

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:01:57 – 00:02:26]:
[00:01:57] If our trust in God is never tested, it may never deepen. [00:02:01] And yet, when we’re in the midst of a trial, it rarely feels like growth. [00:02:08] For me, it feels like confusion. [00:02:11] It may feel like waiting. [00:02:14] It may feel like stretching. [00:02:15] Sometimes stretching so far we wonder if we might break. [00:02:20] But, friend, God never stretches us to break. [00:02:24] He stretches us to build us.

Perseverance and Biblical Endurance

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:02:27 – 00:03:02]:
[00:02:27] And the purpose behind stretching? [00:02:29] Well, James tells us that the testing of our faith produces perseverance. [00:02:34] Perseverance is not simply hanging on or gritting our teeth or pushing through. [00:02:41] Biblical perseverance is the steady, patient endurance that comes from trusting God. [00:02:47] It’s the kind of perseverance that says God. [00:02:50] I don’t understand this, but I trust you. [00:02:54] I don’t know the outcome, but I know you were at work. [00:02:58] I feel stretched. [00:03:00] Yet I know you are strengthening me.

Maturity of Faith

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:03:03 – 00:03:42]:
[00:03:03] And James goes on to say that perseverance must finish its work so that we may be mature and complete. [00:03:10] Mature faith is not fragile. [00:03:13] It’s not easily shaken. [00:03:16] It’s not dependent upon our circumstances. [00:03:20] Mature faith is rooted, grounded and steadfast. [00:03:26] And that kind of faith is formed in the stretching and when the stretching feels too much, let’s admit it, sometimes stretching can feel a bit too much. [00:03:38] It can feel painful. [00:03:40] It can feel disappointing.

God’s Nearness in Seasons of Waiting

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:03:43 – 00:04:18]:
[00:03:43] And maybe you’re in a season like that right now. [00:03:46] A season where you feel pulled in every direction. [00:03:50] A season where you’re waiting for answers, waiting for healing, waiting for clarity. [00:03:56] A season where you’re asking God, why this? [00:03:58] Why now? [00:04:00] And if that’s you, I want you to know God sees you. [00:04:05] God hears you. [00:04:07] And God is with you in the stretching. [00:04:10] He is not distant, he is not silent, he’s not indifferent. [00:04:16] He is shaping you.

God’s Work Through Stretching

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:04:19 – 00:04:55]:
[00:04:19] He is strengthening you. [00:04:21] And he is preparing you for something you cannot yet see. [00:04:26] Sometimes the stretching is God making room in us. [00:04:28] Room for a deeper trust, room for greater peace, or even room for a new season of growth. [00:04:37] And there’s to be joy in the trials. [00:04:41] What does that really mean? [00:04:43] Well, James tells us to consider it pure joy. [00:04:45] When we face trials now, joy does not mean pretending everything is fine. [00:04:52] It doesn’t mean smiling through our pain or ignoring our emotions.

Joy in Trials

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:04:56 – 00:05:32]:
[00:04:56] Joy is not denial. [00:04:58] Joy is confidence. [00:05:00] Joy is the quiet assurance that God is working even when we cannot see it. [00:05:06] Joy is the deep rooted belief that God is faithful, God is good and God is present. [00:05:13] Joy is knowing that the trial is not the end of the story. [00:05:16] It is part of the story God is writing in your life. [00:05:20] Joy is choosing to trust God’s process, even when it stretches us. [00:05:26] There’s a woman in scripture I often return to when life feels heavy and I am being stretched.

The Story of Hannah

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:05:33 – 00:06:03]:
[00:05:33] Her name is Hannah. [00:05:35] And if you’ve ever carried a quiet eight, the kind no one really sees, you’ll recognize her story. [00:05:42] Hannah longed for a child. [00:05:45] Not casually, not, you know, it would be nice someday. [00:05:49] This was a deep soul level longing. [00:05:53] Year after year, prayer after prayer, Hannah prayed. [00:05:58] And nothing changed. [00:06:01] And to make it harder, because sometimes it is.

Hannah’s Deep Longing and Pain

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:06:04 – 00:06:40]:
[00:06:04] She wasn’t suffering in silence alone. [00:06:07] She was provoked, mocked, misunderstood. [00:06:13] Scripture tells us that her rival kept provoking her to irritate her. [00:06:18] Can you imagine carrying your deepest pain and having it stirred up on purpose? [00:06:25] Now, some of you might not have to imagine it. [00:06:27] You might be living it. [00:06:30] Every year, Hannah went to the house of the Lord. [00:06:32] And every year, the same reality followed her. [00:06:36] Disappointment, grief and questions.

Hannah’s Response: Showing Up and Pouring Out

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:06:41 – 00:07:12]:
[00:06:41] But here’s what I want you to see. [00:06:43] This is where her story begins to shift. [00:06:46] Instead of shutting down, Hannah showed up. [00:06:51] Instead of numbing out, she poured out. [00:06:55] And as I reflect on Hannah’s story, I keep coming back to this question. [00:07:00] How many times have I allowed Disappointment and the fear of the unknown to shut me down. [00:07:08] Hannah could have withdrawn. [00:07:10] She could have become bitter.

The Courage to Pour Out to God

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:07:12 – 00:07:52]:
[00:07:12] She could have decided her prayers no longer mattered because the waiting had gone on too long. [00:07:19] Yet Scripture shows us something different. [00:07:22] Hannah showed up. [00:07:25] She poured out her heart before God. [00:07:28] And that phrase, she poured out has stayed with me. [00:07:34] Because if I’m honest, there have been seasons in my own life where disappointment silenced me. [00:07:41] Times when unanswered questions made me retreat instead of draw near. [00:07:46] Seasons where fear convinced me that protecting my heart was safer than bringing it honestly before God.

Pouring Out Is Trust, Not Weakness

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:07:53 – 00:08:44]:
[00:07:53] But Hannah reminds us that pouring out is not weakness. [00:07:57] It is trust. [00:08:00] She didn’t arrive at the temple with polished words or perfect faith. [00:08:04] She came carrying her grief, her longing, her confusion, and her desire. [00:08:11] She came exactly as she was and entrusted it all to God. [00:08:18] I wonder just how often we do the opposite. [00:08:21] How often do we shut down spiritually when life doesn’t unfold the way we expected? [00:08:26] How often do we distance ourselves from God because we assume disappointment means he is absent? [00:08:35] We assume disappointment means that’s the end of the story. [00:08:40] For me, I realized that there were moments when I wasn’t anchored to God.

Anchoring to God, Not Outcomes

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:08:44 – 00:09:46]:
[00:08:44] I was anchored to outcomes, anchored to certainty, anchored to wanting clarity before surrender. [00:08:51] But Hannah’s story invites us into something deeper. [00:08:55] And anchoring God does not mean we will always understand his timing. [00:08:59] It means we trust in him even when we do not understand. [00:09:04] When disappointment comes, and it will, our invitation is not to shut down, but to show up, to pray, to pour out, to remain, to remain steadfast. [00:09:16] And maybe today God is not asking you to have stronger faith. [00:09:21] Maybe he’s simply inviting you to come honestly bring your disappointment, bring your fears, bring the unanswered prayers and trust that he can hold what you pour out. [00:09:36] Let me ask you, what have you been carrying quietly, that God might be inviting you to pour out before him today? [00:09:43] I mean, like, really pour out your heart to Him.

Hannah’s Honest Prayer

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:09:47 – 00:10:08]:
[00:09:47] There’s this moment in First Samuel where Hannah is at the temple and she is undone before the Lord. [00:09:53] Not sure if you’ve ever been undone. [00:09:56] I have. [00:09:57] And Hannah, she is undone before the Lord. [00:10:01] She is not composed. [00:10:03] She’s not saying the right words. [00:10:04] She’s not trying to keep it together. [00:10:07] She is weeping.

Surrender in the Waiting

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:10:09 – 00:10:57]:
[00:10:09] She is praying from a place so deep that her lips are moving, but no sound is coming out. [00:10:17] And even then, she is misunderstood. [00:10:20] The priest, Eli, he assumes she’s drunk. [00:10:24] Have you ever been there where you’re doing the best you can to stay faithful, and yet you are still Misunderstood. [00:10:32] Here we see Hannah’s faith being stretched, tested and refined in the waiting. [00:10:38] And somewhere in that place, not when her circumstances changed, because nothing had changed yet, but while they remained the same, something in her shifted. [00:10:51] Hannah surrendered. [00:10:53] Not in defeat, but with a heart fully open.

The Faith Formed in Stretching

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:10:58 – 00:11:27]:
[00:10:58] She surrendered. [00:11:00] She basically tells the Lord, if you give me a son, I will give him back to you. [00:11:08] That’s not a small prayer. [00:11:10] That’s the kind of faith that has been formed in the waiting. [00:11:14] And here’s what I don’t want you to miss. [00:11:16] Scripture says that after she prayed, she went her way and ate something. [00:11:22] And her face was no longer downcast. [00:11:26] Nothing had changed.

Perseverance Finishing Its Work

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:11:27 – 00:11:56]:
[00:11:27] Her prayers had not been answered. [00:11:29] There was no visible breakthrough. [00:11:31] But something inside Hannah had settled. [00:11:35] That’s perseverance finishing its work. [00:11:39] That’s the quiet, holy transformation that James talks about in James. [00:11:46] One, two, four, count it all. [00:11:49] Joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds. [00:11:54] For you know that is the testing of your faith.

The Endurance Formed in Testing

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:11:57 – 00:12:32]:
[00:11:57] And the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. [00:12:00] And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. [00:12:09] Here we are reminded that the testing of our faith produces something deeper than quick relief. [00:12:16] It produces endurance. [00:12:18] Just like Hannah. [00:12:21] A faith that isn’t dependent upon outcomes, but is anchored in trust. [00:12:27] Trusting God. [00:12:29] Eventually, yes, God answered Hannah’s prayer.

The True Miracle: Transformation in the Waiting

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:12:32 – 00:13:12]:
[00:12:32] She gave birth to Samuel. [00:12:35] But the real miracle wasn’t just the birth of a son. [00:12:38] It was the woman she became in the waiting. [00:12:42] A woman who could trust God with open hands and an open heart. [00:12:46] A woman whose faith had been stretched but not broken. [00:12:49] A woman who had learned how. [00:12:51] How to pour out her heart honestly before the Lord. [00:12:57] So if you’re listening today and you feel stretched, if your faith feels thin, if you’re tired of carrying something that hasn’t changed yet, I want to gently remind you God is not absent in your waiting.

God’s Work in Our Waiting

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:13:12 – 00:13:33]:
[00:13:12] He is forming something in you. [00:13:15] He’s not rushing. [00:13:17] He’s not overlooking you. [00:13:19] He is not withholding care from you. [00:13:23] He is producing perseverance. [00:13:26] And he will be faithful to finish that work in you. [00:13:30] You don’t have to have polished prayers. [00:13:32] You don’t have to hold it all together.

What Stretching Looks Like in Real Life

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:13:34 – 00:14:18]:
[00:13:34] Just come. [00:13:36] Come as you are. [00:13:37] Just like Hannah. [00:13:40] Honest, weary, hopefully. [00:13:43] Even if it’s just a flicker, you’re not alone in this. [00:13:48] So what does stretching look like in real life? [00:13:51] Stretching can look like waiting longer than you expected, walking through uncertainty, facing a difficult decision, navigating a strained relationship, or carrying a burden you didn’t choose. [00:14:06] It May even look like letting go of something you wanted to, trusting God when the outcome is unclear. [00:14:12] And at each of these moments, God whispers, daughter, I am with you.

God’s Strength and Growth Through Stretching

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:14:18 – 00:14:56]:
[00:14:18] I am strengthening you. [00:14:20] I am growing you. [00:14:22] I have something for you, so let perseverance finish its work. [00:14:29] As I think about Hannah pouring out her heart before God, I’m reminded of a season in my own life where prayer stretched me in ways I didn’t expect. [00:14:39] There was a godly man who had become like a father to Scott and me for many years. [00:14:45] He wasn’t family by blood, but in so many ways, he was family in faith. [00:14:51] He mentored us. [00:14:52] He guided us, he listened, he encouraged.

Personal Story: Loss and Trust

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:14:57 – 00:15:29]:
[00:14:57] He spoke truth when we needed direction and reminded us to keep our eyes on Jesus. [00:15:03] His life reflected steady faithfulness, not perfection, but a quiet, enduring walk with God that left an imprint on everyone around him. [00:15:14] And then he became ill. [00:15:16] And suddenly the roles felt different. [00:15:19] The man who had prayed for others now became the one being prayed over. [00:15:23] Scott and I prayed. [00:15:25] We prayed with expectation. [00:15:27] We prayed for healing.

Praying and Grieving

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:15:29 – 00:16:23]:
[00:15:29] We asked God for more time, for more conversations, for more wisdom, and for more years. [00:15:36] I remember carrying both hope and fear at the same time. [00:15:39] And if I’m honest, I truly believe God would heal him the way I wanted him to. [00:15:45] But God called him home, and it broke our hearts. [00:15:50] There’s no other way to say it. [00:15:53] There was grief in realizing that someone who had shaped our lives so deeply would no longer be sitting across from us, speaking, encouragement, sharing his wisdom, or reminding us to trust God. [00:16:07] For a while, I wrestled with that tension that so many of us face. [00:16:11] What do we do when we pray and we pour out and God answers differently than we hoped? [00:16:20] But over time, God began to shift my perspective.

Remembering and Finding Purpose in Pain

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:16:25 – 00:17:26]:
[00:16:25] I started remembering instead of only grieving, remembering the years we had with this incredible man of God, remembering the conversations, remembering the prayers he prayed over us, remembering the way he lived his faith quietly and consistently. [00:16:46] And I realized something. [00:16:48] Our prayers were not wasted. [00:16:51] You see, prayer was never just about changing the outcome. [00:16:55] Prayer drew us into deeper trust and dependence on God. [00:16:59] During the waiting and the letting go, this godly man, this dear, dear friend, his life was a gift. [00:17:11] He was such a gift to us at a time as a young couple with a young family moved to Miami to a new church, a new community. [00:17:23] And this godly man just showed up.

Legacy of Faith and Enduring Through Heartbreak

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:17:27 – 00:18:19]:
[00:17:27] His life was truly a gift, and his influence remains and his legacy continues. [00:17:35] And while I still miss him, I am grateful. [00:17:38] Grateful God allowed our paths to cross. [00:17:41] Grateful for the years of mentorship, grateful for A man who showed us what faithful endurance looked like. [00:17:49] Sometimes being anchored to God doesn’t mean our hearts don’t break. [00:17:53] Sometimes it means trusting that even in heartbreak, God is still present. [00:17:59] Have you ever experienced a season where God’s answer to your prayer looked different than you’d hoped and where you see his faithfulness in it? [00:18:09] Now I want to invite you into a moment of reflection. [00:18:14] Think about a time in your life when you felt stretched, really stretched.

Reflection and Growth in Stretching

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:18:20 – 00:19:03]:
[00:18:20] Maybe it was a season of loss, a difficult transition, or a moment when God asked you to step out in faith. [00:18:30] I believe we all have experienced a season of loss. [00:18:34] What did God teach you in that season? [00:18:38] How did your faith grow? [00:18:41] And how are you different? [00:18:42] Because of that stretching. [00:18:45] Often when we look back, we see that the stretching was not a breaking, it was a blessing. [00:18:50] And if you’re in a season of stretching right now, I want to speak this over you. [00:18:58] You are not alone. [00:19:00] You are not forgotten. [00:19:01] You are not failing.

Encouragement in Seasons of Growth

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:19:03 – 00:19:31]:
[00:19:03] You are growing. [00:19:05] God is doing a deep work in you. [00:19:08] A work that may not be visible yet, but a work that is absolutely necessary. [00:19:14] He is forming perseverance. [00:19:16] He is building maturity. [00:19:18] And he is shaping you into the woman he created you to be. [00:19:23] And he will not waste this season and my prayer for your journey. [00:19:30] Father.

Prayer

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:19:31 – 00:20:19]:
[00:19:31] For the woman listening today who feels stretched, weary, or uncertain, I ask that you surround her with your peace. [00:19:39] Remind her that you are near, that you are working, and that this season is shaping her for your purpose. [00:19:47] I pray you give her the strength to persevere, eyes to see your goodness, and a heart that trusts you in the stretching. [00:19:56] Grow her faith, deepen her joy, and make her mature and complete in you in your holy and precious name. [00:20:05] Amen. [00:20:07] Thank you for joining me today. [00:20:09] And if today’s message encouraged your heart, I’d love for you to share it with a friend who might need the same reminders. [00:20:16] And if you haven’t subscribed yet, I’d be grateful if you did.

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:20:19 – 00:20:42]:
[00:20:19] I would love nothing more than to stay connected as we continue this journey of faith together. [00:20:25] And remember, when your faith is stretched, God is strengthening you. [00:20:29] When you feel tested, God is growing you. [00:20:32] And when the journey feels heavy, God is carrying you. [00:20:36] And I am so honored to walk this journey of faith with you. [00:20:40] Until next time.

More about Reflecting Life: A Christian Woman’s Journey of Faith

In today’s hustle-driven culture, even faith has become something to perform. Too many Christian women are living disconnected from their true identity in Christ. Constantly striving, doubting, and searching for belonging in places that can’t truly fulfill them. But you were created to be loved, chosen, and formed by grace, not to earn your worth through endless doing.

Welcome to Reflecting Life, A Christian Woman’s Journey of Faith, where Christian women can exhale, reflect, and remember whose they are.

Hosted by Biblical mentor and spiritual formation coach Dr. Robin Revis Pyke, this podcast features real women sharing real stories of faith, struggle, and hope, along with thoughtful conversations that gently point you back to God’s truth. This is companionship on the journey and not cheerleading from the sidelines.

This show will deliver Scripture-grounded teaching, honest storytelling, and gentle formation practices to help you move from striving to rootedness, from performance to presence with God. If you’re spiritually restless and craving depth over surface inspiration, you’re in the right place.

We’ll answer questions like:

  • How do I find my identity in Christ?
  • What is God’s purpose for my life?
  • How do I hear God’s voice clearly?
  • Am I enough in God’s eyes?
  • What is spiritual formation, and why does it matter?
  • Why do I feel spiritually burned out?
  • How do I know if God loves me?
  • How can I find purpose after 40 as a Christian woman?
  • What does it look like to live from grace instead of performance?
  • How do I navigate between seasons of faith?

This podcast is for Christian women in in-between seasons who love God but are wrestling with transition, calling, identity, or a sense of belonging. Whether you’re feeling spiritually restless, frustrated by performance-driven faith, quietly wrestling with obedience and waiting, or simply craving deeper formation, this space was made for you.

If you’re ready to stop striving for acceptance and start resting in the truth that you’re already formed in Christ, this podcast will give you the encouragement, Biblical truth, and sacred space to do just that.

Come as you are. Pause, listen, and reflect honestly on where God is meeting you in this season.

Ruth and Naomi remind us that friendship is more than companionship. It can be a place where God shapes us, strengthens us, and reminds us we don't have to walk difficult seasons alone.

In Episode 10 of Reflecting Life, we're looking at loyalty, grief, and the friendships God uses along our journey. 💗

We can spend a great deal of energy trying to beco We can spend a great deal of energy trying to become more patient, more loving, more faithful, more Christlike.

But Jesus gives us a different invitation: 𝗔𝗯𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲.

Spiritual maturity is not something we manufacture through greater effort. It is formed as we remain rooted in Christ through Scripture, prayer, surrender, and everyday obedience.

The fruit comes from the connection.

So before asking, “What do I need to do better?” ask: “Am I staying close to Jesus?”

Today, set aside 10 quiet minutes with Christ. No striving. No agenda. Simply read John 15:1–5, sit with His Words, and ask, “Lord, what are You forming in me?”

What helps you stay rooted in Christ?
