Choosing Presence Over Productivity in Your Walk with Christ

There is a particular kind of tired that shows up in Christian women who love Jesus and keep saying yes. The calendar fills, the ministry grows, the family gets fed, the church gets covered, and somewhere in the middle of all that faithful serving, something slips. The prayers get shorter. Scripture starts feeling like prep work. And even when nothing on the outside looks off, the heart underneath knows the difference between abiding and running.

If that lands close to home, you are exactly who this episode is for. Not to add anything to your plate, but to sit with the question underneath the busyness and remember that Jesus never measured a woman’s faithfulness by how much she produced.

Dr. Robin opens Luke 10:38-42 and returns to the familiar Mary and Martha Bible study, not to shame women, but to notice what Jesus said to Martha. Along the way, Dr. Robin shares from her own Martha moments, from summers of scurrying around the house with a mental list running and comparison creeping in when serving others turns into striving.

What we explore in this episode:

  • Why Martha’s problem was never her serving, and what the Greek word for “distracted” reveals about the divided heart many of us carry
  • What sitting at the feet of Jesus looked like for Mary, and why Jesus called it the better portion
  • How busyness can look holy while replacing time with the One we are serving
  • The connection between abiding in Christ and spiritual formation, and what John 15 teaches about fruit that comes from remaining rather than striving
  • Five reflection questions Dr. Robin offers for the woman who senses her identity has shifted from daughter to worker
  • What changes in the way we serve and love when we return to His presence first

If you have been running hard in one direction and are starting to feel the weight of Christian burnout underneath all the yeses, this one is for you. The ministry leader, the mother, the caregiver, the business owner who wants to understand what resting in Jesus actually looks like in a life that is already full. The woman who is ready to trade productivity as an identity for presence over productivity as a practice, and to remember that her identity in Christ was never tied to her output.

“When we stop abiding, service slowly becomes obligation. Joy becomes pressure. Compassion becomes exhaustion”

– Dr. Robin

If this reflection met you where you are, share it with a friend or a woman in ministry who has been carrying more than she was ever meant to carry. And if you are new to Reflecting Life, this is a quiet space for Christian women who are ready to stop striving and start abiding. Follow the podcast so you do not miss the next conversation.

4: How to Abide in Christ When Life Gets Too Busy to Slow Down

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:00:01 – 00:00:33]:
Welcome. I’m Dr. Robin Revis Pyke, and this is Reflecting Life: A Christian Woman’s Journey of Faith. Here, you will learn what it truly means to live from your identity in Christ. We’ll explore how Christian women, just like you, navigate the in-between seasons using biblical truths and honest conversations. This podcast is your safe space to pause, reflect, and remember who God says you are. So come as you are. You are loved, chosen, and created by grace, and I am so glad you are here.

Starting the Journey & Recent Reflections

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:00:34 – 00:01:24]:
So let’s start this journey together. Hello, sweet friend. I hope you know how grateful I am you’ve joined me today. If you’ve been listening over the past few weeks, we’ve been talking about what it means to faithfully follow Christ, not simply in what we do, but in who we are becoming. Last episode, We reflected on serving as Jesus served. Today, we’re deepening the conversation by moving from outward service to the inner life with Christ, as we reflect on the question: What happens when our service for Christ quietly replaces our time with Christ? Not because we’ve stopped loving Him, not because we’ve abandoned our faith, but because life became full. Ministry became demanding. Family needed us.

The Creep of Busyness

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:01:24 – 00:02:12]:
Church needed volunteers. Friends needed encouragement. Work became overwhelming, and before long, our calendar became full while our soul became empty. One of the greatest threats to our spiritual growth isn’t walking away from Jesus; it’s becoming so busy serving Him that we slowly stop. Abiding in Him. Today’s conversation comes from one of the most familiar stories from the Book of Luke, the story of Mary and Martha, and I believe it has something profound to teach us about spiritual formation. Today I’ll be reading from Luke 10, verses 38 through 42, the NIV version. At the home of Martha and Mary.

Reading the Story of Mary and Martha

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:02:14 – 00:03:11]:
As Jesus and His disciples were on their way, He came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to Him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what He said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to Him and asked, Lord, don’t You care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me! Martha, Martha, the Lord answered, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed, or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her. You see, Martha wasn’t doing wrong things, and I think Martha receives unfair criticism sometimes. Jesus never rebuked her because she served. Hospitality matters.

The Issue of Attention, Not Activity

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:03:12 – 00:03:46]:
Preparing meals matter. Welcoming guests into our home matters. Serving others matters. In fact, Scripture repeatedly encourages us to hospitality. So the issue was never Martha’s activity. It was her attention. She became distracted. And the biblical Greek word for distracted, perispío, I believe I pronounced that correctly, means to be driven in different directions.

Relating to Martha’s Distraction

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:03:47 – 00:04:47]:
Can you relate? One moment we’re praying, the next we’re checking our texts. One moment we’re reading scripture, the next we’re thinking about a much-needed trip to the grocery store. Or one moment we’re worshiping, the next we’re making mental lists of what or who needs to be taken care of. Our hearts become divided— not rebellious, just divided. And perhaps that’s one of the enemy’s quietest strategies— not necessarily to tempt us away from Christ, but to distract us, drive us away. Just enough that our relationship with Him slowly slips into second place. Have you ever had one of those days when the list is long, the clock is ticking, and you feel like you’re sprinting from one thing to the next, trying to make it all happen? I haven’t just had one of those days. I’ve had one of those summers.

Finding Ourselves in Martha Moments

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:04:48 – 00:05:53]:
I feel like Martha, what, scurrying around my home, switching loads of laundry, walking Arlo, Editing podcast scripts, proofing blog posts, running errands, preparing for upcoming events. It can be a lot to navigate, and on some days it leaves me so frazzled that I lose focus and let the less important things overshadow what matters most, like my time alone with God. Can you relate? I call it my Martha moment. It’s that place where busyness and performance take over. And when that happens, comparison isn’t far behind. And my thoughts begin to run rampant. Why aren’t they doing more? How do they have time to go to the spa or spend the day at the beach? Why does it feel like I’m the one doing everything? And just like Martha, I start comparing and Complaining just a bit. And once you step into the trap of comparison, you begin noticing everything.

Facing Comparison and Social Media

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:05:54 – 00:06:27]:
But your eyes can deceive you because what you see isn’t always the truth. Take social media, for example. What you see there is usually the onstage performance of someone’s life, not the behind-the-scenes version. It’s the edited highlight reel, not the messy, unfiltered reality. But social media is another topic for another day. A much-needed topic, nevertheless. I don’t want to digress. Let’s get back to Martha.

Busyness Can Look Holy

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:06:28 – 00:07:30]:
You know, busyness can look holy. One of the reasons this passage is so convicting is because Martha wasn’t busy with sinful things. She was busy doing good things, opening her home. Martha was serving, preparing, providing, meeting the needs of her guests. Many Christian women know this tension, especially those serving in ministry: Sunday school teachers, women’s ministry leaders, mothers, Grammys— woohoo!— caregivers. Christian business owners, authors, speakers, mentors— we spend our lives pouring into others. Eventually, we can become experts at serving while forgetting how to simply sit at the feet of Jesus. Sometimes our calendars become so filled with Kingdom work that we quietly neglect the King Himself.

Mary Chose the Better Portion

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:07:32 – 00:08:02]:
Ah, but Mary chose the better portion. Jesus says something remarkable in this passage. Martha, Martha. Notice his tenderness. There was no shame, no condemnation, just compassion. You are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. One thing. Not 20, not 10.

Presence Before Productivity

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:08:02 – 00:08:55]:
One. Mary had chosen the better portion. She chose presence over productivity, relationship before responsibility, listening before serving, receiving before giving. She reminds us that spiritual formation always begins with being present before serving. Because whatever flows from Christ will always carry greater fruit than whatever merely flows from us. Unfortunately, we live in a Martha culture. Our world rewards productivity. The busier you are, The more successful people assume you must be, and our worth becomes connected to accomplishment.

Jesus Measures the Heart, Not Busyness

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:08:56 – 00:09:53]:
How much we produce, how much we achieve, how many followers we have, how many meetings are scheduled, how many events or invitations have we committed to, how many responsibilities are we juggling. But Jesus has never measured faithfulness by busyness. He measures hearts. And sometimes our greatest act of faith isn’t doing more, it’s stopping. It’s remaining, listening, resting, and abiding. And if you’ve been following along, we talked about abiding and the actual meaning of abiding in episode 4. So what does abiding actually mean? Jesus tells us in John 15, I am the vine, you are the branches. Branches don’t strive to produce fruit; they remain connected.

The Fruit of Abiding

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:09:54 – 00:10:25]:
Fruit is the natural result of abiding. Many of us try to manufacture fruit. We work harder, serve more, volunteer more, study more, teach more, lead more. Yet Jesus says the answer isn’t more striving. It’s a deeper connection. Jesus says, apart from Me, you can do nothing. He doesn’t say you can do less. He says you can do nothing.

Reflections for Drawing Near

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:10:27 – 00:11:45]:
Perhaps today the Holy Spirit is inviting us to linger with these words, not with guilt, But with a gentle, honest openness to His voice. And as we do, I’d love to offer 5 quiet reflections as you seek to draw near to Him. Ask yourself, am I spending more time preparing for God than being with God? Has my prayer life become rushed? When was the last time I opened Scripture simply to enjoy God’s presence rather than to prepare something for someone else. Am I exhausted because I’ve been carrying responsibilities Jesus never asked me to carry? Has my identity quietly shifted from being His daughter to being His worker? Now, my friend, these aren’t questions of condemnation. They’re invitations. And why does this matter? Because the condition of our hearts eventually shapes everything we do. When we stop abiding, service slowly becomes obligation. I’m going to repeat that again.

The Results of Not Abiding

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:11:46 – 00:12:12]:
When we stop abiding, service slowly becomes obligation. Joy becomes pressure. Compassion becomes exhaustion. Generosity becomes resentment. Ministry becomes performance. But when we remain with Christ, our service becomes worship. Our leadership is humble. Our love is genuine.

Authentic Reflection of Jesus

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:12:13 – 00:12:48]:
Our words are seasoned with grace. Our lives begin reflecting Jesus rather than merely representing Him. That’s spiritual formation— Christ being formed within us. So let’s return to the feet of Jesus. Perhaps today you’ve recognized yourself in Martha. I know I have many times. There have been seasons where I loved Jesus deeply, yet I slowly became consumed by doing good things. The invitation Isn’t to quit serving.

The True Gift: A Heart With Jesus

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:12:48 – 00:13:12]:
It’s to reorder our priorities. The greatest gift we bring to those around us isn’t our efficiency. It isn’t our productivity. It isn’t our perfectly organized ministry. It’s a heart that has been with Jesus. People notice the difference. Your family notices. Your friends notice.

Peace Flows From His Presence

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:13:12 – 00:14:26]:
Your church notices because peace cannot be manufactured. Peace is cultivated in His Presence. We serve from abiding, not instead of abiding, because ministry is meant to flow out of His Presence. It is never meant to replace it. And as we close today’s episode, I’d like to leave you with this reflection: It’s a simple invitation for you to pause and listen for God’s whisper. Is there anything in your life, even something good, that has slowly crowded out simply being with Jesus? I encourage you to spend a few quiet moments seeking the Lord as you reflect on this invitation. Sit quietly, listen, and allow His Presence to meet you before anything else asks for your attention. Won’t you pray with me? Father, thank You that You never measure us by our productivity but by our willingness to remain close to You.

A Closing Prayer

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:14:27 – 00:15:35]:
Forgive us for the moments when we’ve become distracted by many things while neglecting the one thing That is truly necessary. Lord, teach us to abide before we serve, to listen before we speak, to receive before we give. Shape our hearts so that everything we do flows from your presence rather than our own strength. Help us become women who truly reflect Christ. May our homes, Ministries, friendships, and leadership overflow with the love and guidance that come from lives truly rooted in You. In Jesus’ precious name we pray, amen. Thank you for joining me today on Reflecting Life, and if today’s episode encouraged you, I’d love for you to share it with a friend who may be carrying many responsibilities. Perhaps she, too, needs a gentle reminder that Jesus is not asking her to do more, but to draw nearer.

Remember to Remain With Christ

Dr. Robin Revis Pyke [00:15:36 – 00:15:56]:
And may you remember that the Christian life is not first about accomplishing more for Christ, but about remaining with Christ. As we abide in Him, He faithfully shapes us into the women who reflect His heart. In every season. Until next time.

More about Reflecting Life: A Christian Woman’s Journey of Faith

In today’s hustle-driven culture, even faith has become something to perform. Too many Christian women are living disconnected from their true identity in Christ. Constantly striving, doubting, and searching for belonging in places that can’t truly fulfill them. But you were created to be loved, chosen, and formed by grace, not to earn your worth through endless doing.

Welcome to Reflecting Life, A Christian Woman’s Journey of Faith, where Christian women can exhale, reflect, and remember whose they are.

Hosted by Biblical mentor and spiritual formation coach Dr. Robin Revis Pyke, this podcast features real women sharing real stories of faith, struggle, and hope, along with thoughtful conversations that gently point you back to God’s truth. This is companionship on the journey and not cheerleading from the sidelines.

This show will deliver Scripture-grounded teaching, honest storytelling, and gentle formation practices to help you move from striving to rootedness, from performance to presence with God. If you’re spiritually restless and craving depth over surface inspiration, you’re in the right place.

We’ll answer questions like:

  • How do I find my identity in Christ?
  • What is God’s purpose for my life?
  • How do I hear God’s voice clearly?
  • Am I enough in God’s eyes?
  • What is spiritual formation, and why does it matter?
  • Why do I feel spiritually burned out?
  • How do I know if God loves me?
  • How can I find purpose after 40 as a Christian woman?
  • What does it look like to live from grace instead of performance?
  • How do I navigate between seasons of faith?

This podcast is for Christian women in in-between seasons who love God but are wrestling with transition, calling, identity, or a sense of belonging. Whether you’re feeling spiritually restless, frustrated by performance-driven faith, quietly wrestling with obedience and waiting, or simply craving deeper formation, this space was made for you.

If you’re ready to stop striving for acceptance and start resting in the truth that you’re already formed in Christ, this podcast will give you the encouragement, Biblical truth, and sacred space to do just that.

Come as you are. Pause, listen, and reflect honestly on where God is meeting you in this season.

But Jesus gives us a different invitation: 𝗔𝗯𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲.

Spiritual maturity is not something we manufacture through greater effort. It is formed as we remain rooted in Christ through Scripture, prayer, surrender, and everyday obedience.

The fruit comes from the connection.

So before asking, “What do I need to do better?” ask: “Am I staying close to Jesus?”

Today, set aside 10 quiet minutes with Christ. No striving. No agenda. Simply read John 15:1–5, sit with His Words, and ask, “Lord, what are You forming in me?”
