Becoming, Not Performing: Slowing Down to Live from Your True Identity in Christ
Many Christian women are tired—but not because they lack faith. They are exhausted from constantly striving, from trying to be “enough.” They carry the weight of expectations from the world, their job, family, and even themselves.
Somewhere along the way, following Jesus became more about doing for God than being with God.
Yet Scripture reminds us that the Christian life is not about performance—it is about formation.

God is More Interested in Who You Are Becoming
Spiritual growth does not start with fixing yourself.
It starts with surrendering to God’s forming work.
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” —Ephesians 2:10 ESV
The word “workmanship” conveys deliberate design, creativity, and attention to detail. You are not merely a project to oversee—you are a masterpiece God is forming.
Before doing anything, remember that we are first beloved daughters of God. Identity always takes precedence over activity. When we forget this truth, we operate out of exhaustion rather than grace.
Slowing Down Creates Space to Listen
The world celebrates busyness, productivity, and visibility. However, God often does His deepest work in stillness and obscurity.
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
—Psalm 46:10a ESV
Slowing down isn’t laziness—it’s obedience.
Stillness isn’t unproductive—it’s formative.
When we slow down, we hear what has been drowned out by noise:
Spiritual formation requires space—space to listen, to reflect,
and to allow God to shape us from within.

Letting Go of the World’s Expectations
Many women are living under labels they were never meant to carry:
But Jesus offers a different way.
Following Christ isn’t about proving your worth—it’s about resting in it. As we release the pressure to become who the world expects us to be, we are free to become who God created us to be—women grounded in Christ, shaped by His love, and guided by His Spirit.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
—Matthew 11:28 ESV
Becoming the Person God Designed You to Be
Spiritual formation is a lifelong journey of becoming—becoming more attentive to God, more rooted in truth, and more aligned with Christ.
“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” —2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV
Transformation is God’s work. Our role is to remain present, available, and surrendered.
You don’t need to rush the journey.
You’re not behind.
God is not finished with you.
Reflection
Take a moment to prayerfully reflect:
- Where in your life have you been striving instead of resting in God?
- What expectations—spoken or unspoken—might God be inviting you to release?
- What would it look like to slow down and listen for God’s voice this season?
You might consider journaling your responses or sitting quietly with God, allowing Him to speak to your heart.
