The Significance of Advent: Waiting with Purpose and Hope

The Significance of Advent: Waiting with Purpose and Hope
As December arrives, our world starts to move at a frantic pace. Shopping lists grow longer, schedules get busier, and holiday music fills every space. It’s easy to get caught up in the rush, even with the best intentions. We discover that we are no longer focused on the significance of Advent — waiting with purpose and hope — instead, we are bustling through the holiday, forgetting what matters most!
But for the follower of Christ — and especially for the Christian woman seeking to live with intention — Advent offers something different. It is an invitation to slow down. To breathe. To wait. To remember.
Advent, from the Latin word adventus meaning “coming” or “arrival,” is a season marked not by hustle, but by holy anticipation. It begins four Sundays before Christmas and extends until December 24th, providing a time to pause and prepare our hearts — not just for a holiday, but for the coming of Christ.
“10 But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.'” Luke 2:10-11 NIV
And Advent isn’t just about looking back to the manger in Bethlehem. It’s also about looking ahead — to the promised return of Christ, when He will come again in glory to make all things new. We live between these two “comings” — the cradle and the crown — and Advent guides us to wait with hope, peace, joy, and love.
A Brief History of Advent
The practice of Advent dates back to the 4th and 5th centuries. Early Christians used this time to prepare — through prayer, fasting, and reflection — for both the celebration of Christ’s birth and the anticipation of His return. While the exact origins vary across regions and traditions, the Church has long seen Advent as a mini “Lent”: a time of inner preparation, repentance, and longing.
In the Middle Ages, Advent became more formally observed in the Western Church, particularly through the use of Scripture readings and themes that emphasized waiting for Christ, much like Israel waited for the Messiah.
Over time, the Church embraced the four-week format we now recognize today, with each Sunday highlighting a central theme:
- Hope – remembering the prophets who foretold the coming of the Messiah.
- Peace – embracing the peace Christ brings to a weary world.
- Joy – celebrating the joy that burst forth with the birth of Jesus.
- Love – reflecting on the extravagant love of God revealed in Christ.
Today, these themes are often marked with the lighting of Advent candles. This tradition beautifully symbolizes the increasing light of Christ breaking into the darkness of our world.
Why Advent Matters for Us Today
In a culture that thrives on instant gratification, Advent calls us to patiently wait. In a world obsessed with noise and distraction, Advent invites us into quiet reflection. And in a time when so many chase after temporary joy, Advent anchors us in eternal hope. Advent is significant to our spiritual growth and nourishment.
For Christian women — whether you’re in the trenches of motherhood, navigating a difficult season, celebrating new beginnings, or longing for restoration. Advent offers a space to pause and remember:
✨ Jesus came.
✨ Jesus is coming again.
✨ And He is with us, even now — Emmanuel.
So this December, let’s choose not to rush toward Christmas. Instead, let’s walk slowly, intentionally, through each week of Advent. Savoring our Savior as we draw closer to the heart of Jesus.
