God’s Special Possession
She closed her eyes as she simultaneously shut her laptop, repeating the words she had just read.
“Thank you for your interest in this position; however, we are continuing on with other candidates.”
Between multiple job prospect eliminations, friendships that have gone silent, and even the painful exclusions from some family members, she wasn’t sure just how much more she could take.
Have you been there? Have you walked through a season where it seemed that each opportunity ended with a rejection or thank you but no thanks? It’s not easy or enjoyable wandering through seasons of drought and dormancy. And yes, it may feel as if you are wandering or drifting aimlessly in obscurity, searching for the light.
1 Peter 2:9 NIV says, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
The truth is, in this life, we will have difficulties, including times of being passed up or unaccepted. And while these periods in our lives challenge us, take heart because our identity as a Daughter in Christ is rooted in being chosen by God.
You Are Chosen
How wonderful it is that God declares we are His chosen people! John 15:16 NIV assures us of this when Jesus shared with His disciples, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.”
But what does it mean to be chosen by God?
The disciples were chosen to go out and bear fruit, and we have been chosen to do the same – produce lasting fruit.
Regardless of the mistakes, hardships, and trials we have endured in our lifetimes, the Author of everything considers us holy and His special possession (1 Peter 2:9). What an incredible honor that even when no one else chooses us, God opens His heart and all of heaven as He calls us into the light to bear fruit for His glory!
Praise His Wonderful Works
Not only were we chosen by God, but we were fearfully and wonderfully created to fully embrace a lifestyle of praise to the Lord. It is through the act of gratitude that we remember all God has done for us while evoking anticipation for hope in His goodness.
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14 NIV
Praise keeps our perspective on God’s power and faithfulness while preventing the humanity of our flesh from engaging in self-reliance for everything we need, want, and long for.
What a privilege it is to cry out in worship to our Creator. God loves us. Isn’t it remarkable that God created us along with the mountains, raging rivers, and birds of the air?
As David praises God in Psalm 139:14, we, too, should follow suit and praise God each and every day in honor of all He has done for us and continues to do!
To God be the glory!
In the Light
Not only are we set apart because God chose us, but He loves us so much that He sent His one and only Son to die on Calvary’s cross. Through Christ’s ultimate sacrifice, our sins have been forgiven, the chasm is no more, and we can freely and boldly approach the throne of God!
Our identity in Christ enables us to live empowered lives as we reflect His glorious light to the world. For once, we were bound by the darkness of sin, struggle, and death, and now we are children of the light of forgiveness, freedom, and life!
Beloved, our identity is established simply because God chose you, and He chose me.
There is nothing you can do to earn it, and there is nothing you can do to make God love you any less. You are His special possession simply because of His unending love for you.
Your identity is in Him. He calls you Daughter.
