5 Emotional Wellness Tips for Living Your Best Life!
We’ve focused our conversations this month on the eight dimensions of wellness. And we learned that our wellness is much greater than physical health, and prioritizing our wellness is essential to living our life to the fullest – our best life!
This week, our emphasis is on Emotional Wellness – your feelings and emotional health – which is significant to our total well-being!
Why is our emotional health important to our wellness? Because our emotional health impacts our physical, social, and mental health. Emotional wellness influences our behavior. When we are emotionally well, we are better able to cope with life’s stressors.
Those of you who’ve connected with me, I stress the value of managing our thoughts, our mindset. A method we walkthrough includes our thoughts, feelings, and behavior, which imminently leads to our outcomes. And, based on our emotions, our outcomes can be positive or negative. I’ve had plenty of both!
Researcher’s Melnyk and Neale, American Nurse Today, shared, “When you’re emotionally well, you can cope with stressors in healthy ways so that they don’t become overwhelming and interfere with your functioning or lead to unhealthy coping strategies.”
A rather significant outcome, yes?
Daniel Goleman’s book Emotional Intelligence defines Emotional Intelligence (EQ) as the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions as well as recognize, understand, and influence the emotions of those around us. Again, focusing on how our emotional wellness directs our thoughts, feelings, behavior, and outcomes.
I encourage you to take some time to read up on the benefits of Emotional wellness and the methods available to you to assist in managing your emotions when feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or frantic.
5 Emotional Wellness Tips
Manage your thoughts.
I encourage you to let go of anything not serving you.
Examine your thoughts and ask, are my thoughts harmful, dark, and discouraging?
If your thoughts are not serving you, take time to sort through your thoughts, and ask yourself, why am I having these thoughts and what messages can I create to better serve me?
Journal those feelings!
Journaling is a release of thoughts and emotions, which brings a therapeutic effect to our lives.
Journaling allows us to release mental blocks by placing our thoughts and feelings on paper. We are clearing our minds of any entanglements.
When we experience, the calmness that comes with releasing our emotions, creativity, and happiness can flourish. Then in full circle, that creativity will bring our thoughts and imagination to life!
Breathe. Just breathe.
Spend time throughout the day inhaling and exhaling. Take in long, slow breaths of air to relax and de-stress.
Research shows the benefits of deep breathing has a positive effect on our heart, brain, digestion, and immune system.
Eating healthy. Know your body.
Eating healthy foods is a priority for our wellness and an excellent boost to our emotional wellness. The right foods increase our energy levels, our mood, and our productivity!
We are each different in our body composition, so it’s important to understand how the foods we eat affect us. Caffeine may not impact you as much as it impacts me. I need to limit my caffeine intake to a small cup of coffee each morning due to my body chemistry. Although too much caffeine isn’t great for anyone so be cautious as to what you take in.
Despite all of the benefits, our electronics can be a tremendous distraction, drawing our attention away from what’s matters most! Not only will a digital detox reduce stress, but it will also allow you to be present.
