How to Serve God in the Midst of Everyday Life

Do you ever wonder how you can serve the Lord with the talents and gifts He’s given you? Are you a bit apprehensive about sharing your gifts or even acknowledging that you have gifts? Do you sometimes feel that you may not be as gifted or talented as some of your peers? Do your doubts become so big that you begin to question your role in life?
You are Not Alone
If you’ve ever pondered these thoughts or hesitated to live out your purpose, you’re not alone. Women of all ages often struggle to recognize their role in God’s design, particularly when questioning their strengths and abilities. Do your thoughts lead you astray as you wonder what you have to offer and how you can live on mission for the glory of God? Trust me, you are not alone, but I want you to know it’s not as difficult as we may sometimes make it. Let’s reflect on Romans 12:1-2 for a moment.
“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.” Romans 12:1-2 (The Message)
What are You Offering God?
You see, God never intended for us to stress over ways to serve or how to use our gifts. He knew our fullest and best life would be best lived to glorify and honor Him in all we do. As shared in Romans 12, we are to place our lives before God as an offering.
I’ve served God in many positions over the years. My positions were as vast and varied as one could imagine. I served as a Pre-K 4 teacher, a church financial assistant, a communications coordinator, and a director of admission. My life was incredibly busy. But it never seemed that I was too busy because I absolutely loved my roles, and I was serving exactly where God had placed me in the midst of everyday life.
Why was I so happy serving in these diverse roles? Because I love to help others succeed, find their fit in life, and overcome life’s challenges. Looking back, I’m amazed at how God orchestrated my journey and placed me right where I was needed at the right time. I’ll admit my journey has taken me on some wilderness adventures, but thankfully God has continued to lead me and direct me, and I followed Him.
Embrace the Trials
I wish I could tell you that I’ve loved every season, but I haven’t. There were many times my insecurities or fears would stop me right in my tracks. And then, the loneliness would sweep me right off my feet, causing me to crash into the wave of hopelessness. I’m not sure there is anything quite like the feeling that you’re the only one. I’m sure Esther felt it, Abigail felt it, Mary felt it, and Naomi felt it. I wish I could tell you life is a breeze and every step you take will bring you much happiness. But, my friend, life is hard and challenging, and it’s what we do in those hard times that gets us through the trials. And it’s the trials that lead us to our purpose.
Leading in the Midst of Everyday Life
My current season is filled with family, writing, studying, and mentoring. Not only am I fortunate to be surrounded by Godly mentors, but I’m also blessed to be serving as a mentor to some remarkable young women. Whether the need is spiritual, professional, or personal, I’m all in for them. There’s nothing I want more than to see someone succeed. I love the ah-ha moment when I see an expression filled with joy, whether it’s because a goal has been achieved or a purpose discovered. Life is meant to be lived regardless of your circumstances, and that’s what it’s like to lead in the midst of everyday life.
I want you to know that our conditions and daily life do not stop when we are leading. We lead despite our circumstances. We are called to step into our roles regardless of our fears, insecurities, or doubts. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, God doesn’t call you to serve because of your qualifications; He calls you to serve because of your faith in Him. He has the utmost confidence in your ability because He created you. He knows the intentions of your heart. If He believes in you, then why do you doubt yourself? Once you embrace who you are and whose you are, you will begin to serve using your God-given gifts. All He asks is that you believe.
Seek Him
Today, I encourage you to ask God to help you embrace your gifts. Let Him know your willingness to serve and give your life as an offering to Him. Pray for God to lead you to an area of service where you can use your gifts to honor and glorify Him. As you wait, trust that God will equip you and prepare you for the journey. Then, my sweet friend, sit back and enjoy the ride!
